The Department of Biology The Department of Biology is located in Winston Hall and, with the addition of a new wing in 1992, provides excellent teaching and research space as well as offices for faculty, graduate students and support personnel. A new animal facility for the housing of vertebrate animals is conveniently located in the building. The Department has an impressive Microscopy Facility with a full-time resident Microscopy Specialist. The Department also maintains the Charles Allen Field Station on nearby Belews Lake where field studies on ecology and aquatic biology can be performed. Currently, there are twenty-two full-time professors in the Department. The faculty is highly diverse in their research interests and this diversity is one of the great strengths of the Department. Within this diversity, however, reside complementary frameworks of research interests which provide a rich opportunity for collaboration and other teaching and research interactions. Faculty which have related interests have formed Focus Groups to broaden their capabilities in teaching and research in ways that not only increase their own perspectives but significantly enhance the experiences of graduate students interested in the areas represented by the Focus Groups. Four such Focus Groups in the areas of (1) Ecology, Evolution and Systematics, (2) Comparative Physiology and Behavior, (3) Cellular and Molecular Biology, and (4) Integrative Plant Science currently exist within the Department. These Focus Groups not only act as vehicles to enhance research projects and collaborations but also as forums for weekly meetings of participants to discuss recent advances in their respective fields. |
