Biology: Master's and Doctoral Programs

The Master's Degree program at Wake Forest includes two main components. In consultation with a three member advisory committee, a 24 credit hour course curriculum is designed to enhance the student's undergraduate training. The student also designs and carries out a comprehensive thesis investigation in the laboratory of one of the Biology faculty. The Ph.D. program is fundamentally research oriented. Doctoral students take qualifying exams in their second year and mix graduate seminar courses and any appropriate general coursework with a heavy emphasis on dissertation research.

M.S. and Ph.D. students are typically admitted with full tuition remission and supported by Teaching Assistantships or Research Assistantships. TA and RA stipends during the academic year are currently $14,000. Until the last year of the program, students supported by a TA also receive $1,500 during the summer months, for an annual stipend of $15,500.

Our Ph.D. students have been highly successful in getting professorships.  In the Spring of 2001, three students are completing their doctorates, and all three have landed teaching jobs for next fall before completing their dissertations!

Applicants are encouraged to discuss potential student/advisor relationships with faculty in their area of interest as part of the application process.
