Irv Marcus

California artist Irv Marcus is well known for his use of vivid color combined with a playful, expressionist interpretation of his subject matter. Many of his works appear as “snapshots” from stories in progress, and as such, invite the viewer to fill in details and make a personal interpretation of the “captured moment.”

Marcus was one of the first artists selected for Wake Forest University’s Rockefeller Artist-in-Residence program in 1979. He spent three months in Winston-Salem, teaching classes at WFU and the NC School of Arts, and interacting with the community. The residency also included a one-person exhibition at SECCA. Two major paintings from this 1979 exhibition are on permanent display at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Five works on paper by Marcus are in Wake Forest’s art collection. This exhibition in the Hanes Art Gallery will display 15 oil pastel drawings, including several from the university’s collection.

Marcus received his MFA from the University of Iowa in 1952. His work has been exhibited nationally in major museums and galleries, including the San Francisco Art Institute, Oakland Art Museum, Butler Institute of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC.
