Robert Motherwell
Blue/Green is a hand woven wool tapestry based on a painting by the Abstract Expressionist Robert Motherwell. Motherwell collaborated on his tapestries with Gloria F. Ross, sister of his third wife, artist Helen Frankenthaler. Gloria Ross, a widely known tapestry maker, sought to bring artists and weavers together to create contemporary wall hangings. Professionals in France or Scotland wove the tapestries, although Motherwell and Ross played a hands-on roll in the entire process. Like his paintings, Blue/Green is an abstract work that has thematic content. Motherwell always stressed that “his is an art of subjects”. Landscapes were a popular theme for the artist in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. The blue and green in this work come from Motherwell’s childhood in California and symbolize the grass, sky and sea.
