DEPARTMENT
The Department of Art at Wake Forest University is committed to combining the practice of art and the study of art history in order to foster an understanding of the complex potential of visual communication and culture. Our goal is to develop an understanding of, and a respect and enthusiasm for art and for visual experience through instruction and curriculum designed to promote critical thinking, visual literacy, and creative expression. The department emphasizes the vital role of art within a liberal arts environment by providing a historical, cultural, and social context for the comprehension, evaluation, and creation of visual art.
The Department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in studio art and art history. Art History course work spans Ancient to Contemporary Art and includes Architecture, Photography, Film, and Visual theory. The Studio Areas are Digital Media, Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture with courses that include Installation, Videography, Public Art, Motion Graphics, and Animation.
The Department is located in The Scales Fine Arts Center with facilities and resources that include The Hanes Art Gallery, The University Art Collection, the Art Department’s Visual Resource Library, START- our student art gallery, The Reynolda House Museum of American Art, and SECCA, The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art. The WFU Art Major was begun in 1976 and has grown to over 100 majors and minors. The Department has over 20 faculty including those instructing in Venice, London and Vienna WFU Programs.
