Tell us about yourself.

Even though I was born and raised in the South I’ve never tasted a steak, ribs or chopped barbeque!

What are your plans after graduation?

I plan first to earn a master of arts in management at the Babcock School and then to complete a master’s degree in public policy at the University of Michigan.

Have you plans changed over the last four years?

When I entered Wake Forest, I had the grand idea that I was going to pursue a degree in chemistry and become a doctor. However, it didn’t take long for me to realize that analyzing chemical reactions wasn’t exactly my cup of tea. So, I chose instead to major in political science, and I discovered my passion for politics, world events and political processes. That choice has guided my decision to pursue a master’s degree in public policy and dedicate my life to public service.

How have you grown during the last four years?

When I entered Wake Forest, I was an ambitious guy, but I was limited because I was a “small box” thinker. Wake Forest has broadened my horizons in unimaginable ways. This University made me much more aware of the world around me and challenged me to set an even higher bar for my future goals.

Why did you choose Wake Forest?

Because of the school’s excellent academic reputation and because it felt like a home away from home. Interacting with Wake Forest’s awesome community of students, faculty and staff is still the most treasured part of my experience here.

What was your favorite class?

My favorite class was a class I took my freshman year with Dr. Beth Hopkins on Race, Ethnicity and the Law. Some of the most stimulating and candid race-related discussions I’ve ever had took place during her course. Dr. Hopkins made sure that we came to class each day prepared to defend our opinions and stand and deliver!

Did you study abroad?

I studied abroad in several different countries including England and Honduras. In both instances, I felt privileged to witness up close the lives of others. Traveling abroad molded me into a much more conscientious global citizen and made me more appreciative of life in America — especially American fast-food joints!

What was your most meaningful extra-curricular experience?

I traveled to New Orleans during spring break of my junior year and assisted in the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. I was moved by the outpouring of support for the people of New Orleans from volunteers who hailed from all over the country. No matter where they came from, it seemed as though each one of them had a vested interest in restoring the city of New Orleans and helping residents reclaim their lives.

Who has influenced you most?

I was blessed to have the mentorship of Dr. Barbee Oakes, director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs. She made me feel welcomed from the moment I set foot on campus and has supported me in every step I’ve taken on my journey. She provided consistent guidance and words of encouragement and challenged me to capitalize on my abilities. Dr. Oakes serves as a model for the person that I’d like to become and inspires me to reach my fullest potential.

What makes a Wake Forest education unique?

Wake Forest is for students who enjoy challenges and opportunities for personal growth. If you’re looking for a university that will help you become the person that you want to be then Wake Forest is the place for you!

What’s your favorite memory of the last four years?

Attending President Hatch’s inaugural ball my freshman year.

What will you miss most about Wake Forest?

I’ll definitely miss basketball season, but above all else, I’ll miss my friends, mentors and all the other folks that I’ve formed close relationships with.

Words of advice for incoming freshmen…

Don’t leave any stone unturned! College is a place for personal, intellectual and spiritual growth, and you should be sure to seek out experiences that will foster growth in all these areas. Wake Forest is a place that offers loads of opportunities, so make sure you take advantage of each and every one!
