Anthropology

Course Information

THE ANTHROPOLOGY MAJOR

A major in anthropology requires a minimum of 33 credit hours and must include:

and one course from each of the following 3 groups:

  1. Methods - 305, 307, 315, 342, 368, 380, 381, 382, 383, 384, 387
  2. Subfield Topics - 150, 301, 329, 332, 333, 336, 337, 339, 350, 355, 361, 362, 363, 364, 366, 367, 385
  3. Area - 111, 313, 334, 358, 370, 374, 376, 377; plus the equivalent of two more full semester courses in anthropology, one of which may be a cognate discipline.

Students are encouraged (but not required) to enroll in a course offering intensive field research training.

A minimum grade point average of 2.0 in anthropology courses is required at the time the major is declared. A minimum grade of C in all anthropology courses counted towards the major is required for graduation.

To be graduated with the designation “Honors in Anthropology”, highly qualified majors (3.5 grade point average in anthropology) should apply to the department for admission to the honors program. They must complete a senior research project, document their research, and satisfactorily defend their work in an oral examination. For additional information, members of the departmental faculty should be consulted.

In consultation with the Minor Advisro, students may design minor programs with a variety of specific foci. For example, a student wishing to concentrate on Human And Cultural Diversity might take:

Biological Anthropology (ANT 113)
Cultural Anthropology (ANT 114),
Human Biological Diversity (ANT 367),
Native Peoples of North America (ANT 358),
Race and Ethnic Diversity in America (AES 151), and
African-American History (HST 240)
