Technological Change at the Archaic- Woodland Transition; December 2001

A Master's Thesis written by Roger Kirchen which considers the technological implications of the presence of small, contracting stemmed points in the Early Woodland of North Carolina's northwest piedmont. Regional data are presented which demonstrate the persistence of the stemmed point tradition into the Woodland period and suggest a single inter-regional point type. It is suggested that these points may have been incorporated into an emerging bow and arrow technology. The reasons as to why the bow and arrow was differentially accepted at this early date are explored through a consideration of economic optimization and the social organization of hunting.
