A Master's Thesis written by Roger Kirchen which considers the
technological implications of the presence of small, contracting stemmed
points in the Early Woodland of North Carolina's northwest piedmont.
Regional data are presented which demonstrate the persistence of the
stemmed point tradition into the Woodland period and suggest a single
inter-regional point type. It is suggested that these points may have
been incorporated into an emerging bow and arrow technology. The reasons
as to why the bow and arrow was differentially accepted at this early date
are explored through a consideration of economic optimization and the
social organization of hunting.

- Report of exploratory excavations of the Mill and Tannery at
Historic Bethabara Park, the site of the first Moravian settlement dating
to 1753, located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
The goals of the research were to locate existing structures at these
sites, attempt to determine their
extent and form, correlate archeological evidence recovered with colonial
maps and other historical
records pertaining to the sites, evaluate the findings of previous
archeological research at these sites,
and to assess the archeological resources present in these areas with
regard to their potential for
productive archeological research in the future. Excavation focused on a
row of log cabins which housed refugees during the French and Indian War.

- Excavations at 31Fy549, an early Woodland site in the western
Piedmont of NC, provide a rare glimpse
at this elusive period in prehistory. This undisturbed, arguably
single-component upland site has produced the oldest dated ceramic
assemblage in the area and a variety of stemmed and triangular points.
This paper addresses the role of this site in a local and regional
chronological and social context.
