Efforts to assist Gulf Coast Wake Foresters after Katrina
President Hatch has e-mailed Gulf Coast area Wake Foresters to offer his prayers and support -- and those of the entire Wake Forest family -- in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. To provide relief, Wake Forest has welcomed a number of visiting students for the fall semester. Tim Auman, University Chaplain, is organizing campus volunteer efforts and has e-mailed the campus community on ways they can help. Wake Foresters can support the hurricane relief effort by making contributions to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund (1-800-HELP NOW or www.redcross.org). The Second Harvest Food Bank of NC is also collecting single serving snacks and water, baby formula and diapers, flashlights, and batteries. Needed items can be donated on campus beginning September 5th in the narthex of Wait Chapel or the Facilities Management Building. The Chaplain’s office is also contacting current Wake Forest students who live in the affected areas to provide support.

New research on self-compassion
High self-esteem may not be as important as high self-compassion in coping with negative life events, according to research by Wake Forest psychologist Mark Leary. "Although Western society has emphasized the importance of high self-esteem, the more important thing may be to have self-compassion, the ability to treat oneself kindly in the face of failure, rejection, defeat, and other negative events," Leary suggests.
