U.S. News & World Report ranks WFU 27th
Wake Forest ranks 27th among 248 national universities in the 2005 edition of U.S. News and World Report’s guide, “ America’s Best Colleges.” Wake Forest was ranked 28th in the 2004 guide. Wake Forest was also ranked 36th on a list of “great schools, great prices.” The guide ranked Wake Forest’s Calloway School of Business and Accountancy 29th in its listing of the country’s top undergraduate business programs. Public forums scheduled in search for new president
Wake Forest University has scheduled forums in September to provide faculty, staff, students, alumni, and others the opportunity to talk with the committee searching for a new president for the University. Thomas K. Hearn Jr. retires as president next June. On the Reynolda Campus, forums will be held September 8, 14, and 23 at 4 p.m. in Pugh Auditorium in the Benson University Center. On the Bowman Gray Campus, a forum will be held on September 27 at 4 p.m. in Babcock Auditorium. Details | Top
Congratulations to Hunter Kemper (’98) for top US Olympic triathlon finish
Hunter Kemper (’98) finished 9th in the men’s triathlon at the Olympics in Athens. Kemper, a former student-athlete for track and cross country, was the top US finisher. Go Deacs! Details | Top

Remarks from New Faculty Orientation dinner
Michele Gillespie, Kahle Associate Professor of History, welcomed new faculty at their orientation dinner earlier this week. “I would like to offer you some advice on how to make the most of the many opportunities Wake Forest offers each of us. First, I want to address the legacy of this University and why I think that matters to us today, and second, I want to speak to the rich opportunities at our beck and call today,” she said. Pulitzer Prize-winning author to speak September 9
Tony Kushner, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of several plays, including “Angels in America,” will give a free, public lecture on September 9 at 7 p.m. in Wait Chapel. The lecture will be followed by a book signing at the College Bookstore. “Angels in America” earned numerous awards, including a Pulitzer Prize, two Tony Awards, and two Drama Desk Awards. New technology initiatives unveiled on campus
A new high-speed wireless network will allow Wake Forest students to surf the Internet, IM friends, and send their professors e-mail from nearly anywhere on campus. The updated network is one of many technology initiatives, including the Technology Quarters house and handheld computers, aimed at creating a completely connected campus. The new network places Wake Forest among a small group of colleges and universities that offer high-speed wireless Internet access in every campus building. Details | Top

Alumni band members – come play at Homecoming!

Openings remain for Golf Academy
The Office of Alumni Activities and the Deacon Club are again proud to be sponsoring the Wake Forest Golf Academy at the Bay Hill Club in Orlando, Florida. We are especially pleased that this year’s Golf Academy is being dedicated to the memory of alumnus Dick Tiddy (’53), former Bay Hill golf professional and founder, with Mr. Palmer, of the Wake Forest Golf Academy. Art gallery opens two new exhibits 
The Charlotte and Philip Hanes Art Gallery will celebrate the opening of two exhibits, “Inside the Ropes,” by Ted Potter, and “Monumental Micros,” a joint exhibition, at a reception on September 10 from 7-9 p.m. A slide lecture by Potter will be held at 6 p.m. in Room 102 of Scales Fine Arts Center. The Calloway School: New F. M. Kirby Chair of Business Excellence
Rob Bliss joins the Calloway School as the F. M. Kirby Chair of Business Excellence. He earned his PhD in Finance at the University of Chicago and most recently served as a senior financial economist and economic advisor with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. His research interests are modeling the term structure of interest rates, interest rate derivatives, and risk management. His teaching will focus on derivatives and corporate finance. Top

Second-year divinity student Katherine Martin (MDiv ’06) reflects on her summer internship at Green Street United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, NC: “If I am quick on my feet and willing to venture past the three or four pews I know well, I can pass the peace with lawyers, construction workers, addicts and recovering addicts, doctors, real estate agents, free lance writers, convicted felons, college students, the homeless…” Details | Top
The School of Law: Students realize impact their work has on neglected child
Professors Debbie Parker (JD ’83) and Chris Coughlin (JD ’90), who teach Legal Research and Writing, began to search for ways to make their course more “real” to law students. A meeting with a leader of an organization that represents abused and neglected children provided a perfect solution: they focused their class on writing an appellate brief on behalf of a young child who was deemed to have been neglected by her parents. The brief was a winner, but the lessons learned in this class went far beyond the basics of appellate brief writing. Details | Top
ATHLETICS
Deacon sports teams begin play in September
The 2004 football season opens 9/4 at Clemson, followed by a 9/11 game at East Carolina. The Demon Deacons’ home opener is 9/18 versus North Carolina A&T (6:30 p.m.). It’s a remarkably busy month for every Deacon fall sports team. The nationally ranked men’s soccer team plays three games at Spry Stadium between 9/17-24. Women’s soccer hosts the WFU Adidas Classic at Spry Stadium 9/10-12. The two-time defending NCAA champion field hockey team plays five September home games at the newly surfaced Kentner Stadium, highlighted by a 9/11 battle with 2004 NCAA runner-up and arch rival Duke. The volleyball teams hosts the Deacon Invitational at Reynolds Gym 9/3-4, then entertains Virginia and Maryland 9/24-25. Most of the cross country teams’ work is done away from home, but the Deacons will host an Alumni Invitational 9/11. Details on all Demon
