President Hatch inauguration approaches
A week of activities will celebrate President Nathan O. Hatch's inauguration, beginning October 18 with a community prayer service featuring Maya Angelou, Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest, and concluding October 22 with a home football game between Wake Forest and North Carolina State University. Two academic symposia will take place October 19 (see Academics section). The culmination of Inauguration Week will be the ceremony in which Dr. Hatch is installed as president at 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 20 in Wait Chapel. Organizers expect the chapel's approximately 2,200 seats to be filled with invited guests, including Wake Forest faculty, representatives of other colleges and universities, government officials, members of the University's Board of Trustees and volunteer boards, community leaders, student and administrative staff representatives, and others. Wake Foresters invited to Inauguration Week events
Wake Foresters are invited to campus to attend the public events of Inauguration Week. Join the Wake Forest community in Brendle Recital Hall to watch a simulcast of the Installation Ceremony of President Nathan O. Hatch. Open seating will be available in Brendle Recital Hall on a first-come, first-served basis; no RSVP required. A reception on Hearn Plaza will begin immediately after the Installation Ceremony. | D. E. Ward |D. E. Ward, Jr. ('43, MD '45) presented Distinguished Alumni Award
Wake Forest presented its annual Distinguished Alumni Award to Dr. D. E. Ward, Jr. ('43, MD '45) at a reception during the University's Homecoming Weekend. The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented to Wake Forest alumni whose civic achievements and exemplary service reflect the University motto, "Pro Humanitate." Ward was recognized for his life-long service contributions, which include his achievements while attending Wake Forest University and the Wake Forest School of Medicine, his service in the U.S. Navy, his career as a surgeon, and his devotion to public service and cancer treatment. ACADEMICS

Ed Wilson ('43) presented Reinhardt Award for Distinguished Teaching
Also at Homecoming, Provost Emeritus and professor of English Ed Wilson ('43) was presented the Reinhardt Award for Distinguished Teaching. Dr. Wilson was nominated for this award by students from the Class of 1995. The Reinhardt Award solicits input from students who graduated ten years ago about professors who made a significant impact in their lives and in their educations at Wake Forest. Dr. Wilson is known for his popular courses on British Romantic Poets. | Top

Academic symposia scheduled for Inauguration Week
In place of the traditional Fall Convocation, Wake Forest will hold two symposia during Inauguration Week on Wednesday, October 19 in Brendle Recital Hall. The first, "Why the Liberal Arts? Exploring the Aims of a University Education," will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. The moderator will be Stanley Katz, professor at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. The second, "The Moral Challenges of Professional Life," will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and will be moderated by E. J. Dionne, Jr., Washington Post columnist and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. The events are free and open to the public. Details | Top

| Charles Kimball |Charles Kimball to lecture on religion and politics (10/6)
Charles Kimball, professor of religion, will deliver a lecture titled "Politics, Society, and Religion under Islam, Christianity, and Judaism" at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 6 in Carswell Hall's Annenberg Forum (Room 111). The event is free and open to the public. Kimball's lecture is the final event the University will hold to foster continuing discussion of Azar Nafisi's book about life in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Reading Lolita in Tehran. The book was Wake Forest's 2005 freshman orientation reading assignment. Details | Top

President’s Weekend to be held (10/21-22)
President's Weekend, which honors members of University Gift Clubs and Endowed Fund Donors, will be held October 21-22 in conjunction with Inauguration Week. Invitations have been mailed and gift club members and endowed fund donors should RSVP as soon as possible by returning the RSVP card or registering on-line (at the address provided on the RSVP card). Many thanks to the more than 1,200 alumni and friends who returned to campus for Homecoming on September 23-24! We had a wonderful Homecoming and want to thank the reunion class committees that organized such great events for reunion classes. Note: the dates for Homecoming 2006 will be announced in winter when the football schedule is released. | Top

Alumni Council education survey
The Wake Forest Alumni Council is researching the possibility of providing lifelong learning/continuing education opportunities on campus—teaching short classes or seminars featuring outstanding WFU professors. Goals are to provide a valuable service to Wake Foresters and to increase their connections to the University. Series of one-act plays scheduled
The Wake Forest University Theatre will continue its Studio Series featuring the directing projects of Wake Forest senior theatre majors with productions of In the Western Garden, All About Al, and Red Carnations at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, October 10 and at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11 in the Ring Theatre in the Scales Fine Arts Center. "Days of the Dead" exhibit in the Museum of Anthropology
The Museum of Anthropology will run its annual "Dias de los Muertos" ("Days of the Dead") exhibit from September 30 through November 5. The exhibit will feature a traditional Mexican "ofrenda," a home altar with sugar skulls, colorful tissue paper cutouts of skeletons, food and beverage offerings, marigolds, and photos of deceased relatives. The "Days of the Dead" celebration is considered a festive time when family members remember and honor their dead and the continuity of life. Details | Top

Babcock School: The Wall Street Journal ranks the Babcock School #7 among regional schools
The Wall Street Journal ranks Wake Forest University's Babcock Graduate School of Management #7 among the nation's top regional schools, according to its fifth annual survey of corporate recruiters, conducted jointly by The Wall Street Journal and Harris Interactive. Wake Forest MBA jumped ten positions from last year, making it the most significant rise of any school in this rankings segment. Details | Top

Divinity School: Alumni endow $250,000 scholarship
David N. Gill ('77) and Diane P. Gill ('77) of Knoxville have established the Rev. Sumner H. Gill and Mrs. Lois C. Gill Scholarship in honor of the life ministry of David's parents. The Gills have fully endowed the scholarship, which will cover full tuition for one student annually. Details | Top

Law School: Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on campus
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg reflected on her life as a law student, wife, mother, lawyer, professor, and judge during a recent program sponsored by the Law School. Details | Top

Medical School: Piedmont Triad Research Park executive director named
The School of Medicine: Christopher Price has been named executive director for the Piedmont Triad Research Park (PTRP). Richard H. Dean, CEO and president of Wake Forest University Health Sciences, said of Price, "With the opening of the newest building on our downtown PTRP campus later this year, we are eager to welcome Dr. Price, who brings a breadth of experience as a life sciences research scientist and a biotechnology entrepreneur." ATHLETICS

| Field Hockey |Field Hockey ranked #1
The #1-ranked field hockey team closes out the regular season with a busy October, playing eight home matches this month. The football team returns home (10/22) to host rival NC State (time TBD), then closes the month at Duke (10/29). The nationally ranked men's soccer has home games vs. Alabama A&M (10/7), Clemson (10/12), Appalachian State (10/19), and North Carolina (10/22). Women's soccer has three key home games in October vs. NC State (10/6), Clemson (10/16), and North Carolina (10/28). After a brutal road schedule, the volleyball team has four consecutive home matches in October vs. Florida State (10/21), Miami (10/22), Clemson (10/28), and Georgia Tech (10/29). The men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the ACC Championships (10/31) in Tallahassee, FL. Women's golf will stay in-state, playing tournaments in Chapel Hill and Wilmington. Men's golf plays three October events in Virginia, Tennessee, and Florida. Men's tennis has October events in Columbia (SC) and Chapel Hill.
