Provost search committee formed
Wake Forest has formed a committee to lead the search for a new provost. President Nathan O. Hatch will chair the committee, composed of representatives from each of the university’s academic units. Details | Top

WFU named "Savviest Nonprofit of the Year"
Wake Forest's management of its endowment has earned it recognition as the Savviest Nonprofit of the Year by Foundation and Endowment Money Management, a newsletter focused on nonprofits’ investment management. Wake Forest’s new honor was announced October 16 in San Francisco at the Annual Nonprofit Awards for Excellence ceremony. According to the newsletter’s Web site, the Savviest Nonprofit Award was “judged based on sophistication, investment knowledge and receptiveness to new ideas.” Details | Top

Campus Kitchens kickoff at Wake Forest
Beyond boiling Ramen noodles or microwaving popcorn, many students do not spend much time cooking. But, this fall, dozens of Wake Forest students are donning aprons three times a week to make healthy and nutritious meals for the needy in the community. The students volunteer at the Campus Kitchen at Wake Forest University, a food recycling program affiliated with The Campus Kitchens Project (CKP), a national organization started by Karen Stephan Borchert '00 and Jessica Jackson Shortall '00. Professor contributes to honey bee genome project
Susan Fahrbach, Reynolds Professor of Developmental Neuroscience, is among the more than 170 researchers who helped decode the honey bee genome. She contributed to the article on the bee genome sequence that appears in the October 26 issue of Nature. Her piece of the puzzle is analyzing the nuclear hormone receptors found in the bee genome. Ethnic pride can help teenagers maintain happiness
Ethnic pride can help teenagers maintain happiness when faced with stress, according to a new study by assistant professor of psychology Lisa Kiang. Her study was published in the October issue of Child Development. Adolescents with positive feelings toward their ethnic group say they are happier on a daily basis than those who have a more negative attitude about their ethnic identity, said Kiang. | Top

David Faber to present portraiture lecture on November 28
As a master printmaker and co-author of the 2007 edition of the bestselling A Guide to Drawing, David Faber, associate professor of art at Wake Forest, brings a practical and scholarly approach to the many realms of portraiture, from caricature to the psychological portrait, from the objective to the idealized. His lecture "Drawing a Face on the Subject of Portraiture" Lecture (Tuesday, November 28, 2006, 7:30 p.m.) will show and discuss work by today's master portraitists, those who, in the words of W.B. Yeats, "may trace the lineaments of a plummet-measured face." Admission is $8, Members/students $5. Details | Top

Documentary to premiere at Wake Forest
In honor of American Indian History Month, Choctaw/Cherokee author and filmmaker LeAnne Howe will visit Wake Forest on November 15-16 for a two-day event, featuring the local premiere of her PBS documentary “Spiral of Fire.” The documentary was produced by Native American Public Telecommunications. Faculty/Guest Artist Dance Concert features guest choreographers
Choreography by guest artists Suzee Grilley and Nina Danilova and four Wake Forest dance faculty members will be featured at the Fall Faculty/Guest Artist Dance Concert presented by the Wake Forest Dance Company and the University’s department of theatre and dance. The concerts will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on November 16-18 and 2 p.m. on November 19 in the MainStage Theatre of Scales Fine Arts Center. Details | Top

Babcock School: BusinessWeek ranks school among top 38 nationally
BusinessWeek has included the Babcock School among the top 38 full-time MBA programs in the nation, according to its latest survey released October 13. The publication ranks the top 30 programs and includes Babcock among eight programs listed alphabetically in its second tier. This comprehensive, biennial survey includes input from more than 16,500 recent MBA graduates, opinions of corporate recruiters from 426 companies and a measurement of faculty quality based on articles in 20 top-level publications. Calloway School: PepsiCo executive speaks at business honor society banquet
Clay Small, senior vice president and managing attorney for PepsiCo, Inc., spoke at the Beta Gamma Sigma business honor society banquet on Thursday, October 5. Mr. Small also serves as chair of the Calloway School Board of Visitors. The focus of his presentation was on "results and integrity", which were hallmarks of Wayne Calloway's leadership at PepsiCo. | Top

Graduate School: Math and Computer Science graduate students win entrepreneurship grant
Chandler Carruth MS '07 (Computer Science) and Anthony Pecorella MA '06 (Mathematics) have been awarded a seed grant and support through Wake Forest's Entrepreneurship program to develop a science-fiction, action-based video game. | Top

Law School: Robert K. Walsh Scholarship Year
The Law School’s Board of Visitors and Law Alumni Council unanimously approved a resolution designating 2007 as the Robert K. Walsh Scholarship Year. The resolution is a tribute to Dean Walsh, who has recently announced his plans to retire from the deanship and return to the faculty after 18 years of dedicated service to the Law School. Four Wake Forest University School of Medicine students have won awards at the 22nd annual Medical Student Research Day. Details | Top

ATHLETICS

Athletics: WFU ranked in top 25 in 9 different sports; Field Hockey wins ACC championship
Did you know that Wake Forest is currently ranked nationally in the top 25 in nine sports: field hockey (#2), men's soccer (#1), women's soccer (#9), women's golf (#12), men's golf (#21), and women's tennis , women's track, baseball and football are all at #22. No other school in the country can make that claim. The first weekend of November promises to be an exciting time for Wake Forest athletics. The field hockey, men's and women's soccer teams will all be chasing an ACC Tournament championship from Friday through Sunday. On Saturday November 4, football and men's basketball will have a double-header of sorts. The football team will host Boston College at 7 p.m., and the Black/Gold men's basketball scrimmage game at Joel Coliseum will precede the game at 3:00 p.m. The weekend of November 10-12 begins competition in NCAA Tournament play while the men's and women's basketball teams open up their respective seasons. The Deacon men's basketball team hosts James Madison November 11 at 2 p.m. The women's team entertains Western Carolina November 14 at 7 p.m., both in Joel Coliseum. The cross country teams will run in the NCAA Championship November 20. | Top

Athletics: Anne Bersagel '05 named 2006 NCAA Woman of the Year
Anne Bersagel '05, a former Wake Forest cross county and track and field star, was honored on October 28 as the 2006 NCAA Woman of the Year. Bersagel beat out eight other finalists for the award, which honors female student-athletes who demonstrate academic and athletics excellence as well as community service and leadership. Bersagel, an economics and political science double-major who graduated with honors in December 2005, was a decorated student who also excelled in cross country and track. | Top
