Florida meteorologist Allen Strum (’95) in the center of widespread devastation
“As chief meteorologist for the ABC television affiliate in Pensacola, Florida,” writes Allen Strum (’95), a communication major, “I was responsible for providing anxious viewers with hurricane information during this past storm season. But never had the news been so bad for our own viewers until the devastation visited our own little slice of heaven. Shortly before Hurricane Ivan made landfall, as I noticed a slight shift to the east in the storm, I realized that things were going to be bad for northwest Florida.” Details | Top

| Convocation 2004 |Vice-chair of 9/11 Commission speaks at Fall Convocation
Former congressman Lee Hamilton told an audience at Wake Forest University that counter-terrorism may be the most pressing issue for the next president of the United States. Hamilton, an Indiana Democrat who served as vice-chair of the 9/11 Commission, spoke to students, faculty, and staff on October 28 in Wait Chapel as part of Fall Convocation. Details | Top

Endowment achieves seventeen percent return
The Wake Forest University endowment achieved a seventeen percent investment return for the twelve-month period that ended June 30, 2004, bringing the endowment’s total market value to $812.2 million at the end of the 2003-04 fiscal year. This one-year total return placed the Wake Forest endowment in the 15th percentile among a large pool of institutional investment funds, indicating that the endowment outperformed eighty-five percent of the institutions in the pool. Over the past ten years, the endowment has grown from $407 million to $812 million, taking into account market returns, additions, and withdrawals. Details | Top

NCAA athletics certification process begins
Wake Forest has begun a campus-wide effort to study its athletics program as part of the Division I athletics certification program. The process, which began this fall, is expected to be completed in November 2005. Established by the NCAA in the early 1990s, the certification process was created to help ensure integrity in the athletics operations of colleges and universities. Wake Forest has established a steering committee and three subcommittees to carry out the process, under NCAA guidance. Members include students (including student-athletes), faculty, staff, alumni, and trustees. A Web site is being established to keep the University community informed on the progress of the certification process. Details | Top

“Black Enterprise” magazine includes Wake Forest on its top-50 list
“Black Enterprise” magazine has named Wake Forest University to its list of 50 Best Colleges for African Americans. In the October issue, Wake Forest is ranked 31st on the annual list, which includes private and public institutions. Details | Top

ACADEMICS

Schoonmaker, Reinhardt, and Waddill awards presented
Wake Forest University honored two professors and two alumni with awards during its Fall Convocation held on October 28. Charles Richman, professor of psychology, was presented with the Donald O. Schoonmaker Faculty Award for Community Service. Sarah Watts, professor of history, was presented with the Jon Reinhardt Award for Distinguished Teaching. President Hearn also presented two alumni with the Marcellus E. Waddill Excellence in Teaching Award during convocation. The 2004 recipients, Lynne Peters (’87) of Cary and Mitchell Cox (’82) of Hillsborough, each received a $20,000 award. Details | Top

Renowned Puerto Rican-born playwright José Rivera visits Wake Forest
During a three-day visit to Wake Forest University, renowned Puerto Rican-born playwright José Rivera will present two free, public events. “A Conversation with Playwright José Rivera” will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 10 in the Thomas C. Taylor Atrium on the second floor of the Calloway Center. Rivera will speak on “Writing as Vocation and Entrepreneurship,” followed by a question-and-answer session and a reception. At 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 12, Rivera will hold a reading of his play “Brainpeople” in the Ring Theatre of Scales Fine Arts Center. Rivera, who studied with novelist Gabriel García Marquéz at the Sundance Institute, is known for creating tragicomedies that transform the bizarre into the familiar. Details | Top

Music department announces holiday concert offerings

President’s Weekend to be held November 12-13
President’s Weekend will be held November 12-13. The weekend is designed to honor members of University Gift Clubs, and it features receptions and other activities, including the Stewardship Breakfast and a post-game party at Bridger Field House. O.A.R. to perform in Wait Chapel
The band O.A.R. (Of A Revolution) will perform at Wake Forest University in Wait Chapel on Friday, November 12. Doors will open at 7 p.m. The opening performers will be Ari Hest at 7:15 p.m. and Ben Lee at 8 p.m. Details | Top

“Apprentice” first-season winner to present lecture
Bill Rancic, the winner of the first season of NBC’s “The Apprentice,” will give a public lecture at Wake Forest University at 8 p.m. on Monday, November 22 in Wait Chapel. The lecture will be followed by a book signing in the College Bookstore located near the chapel. Details | Top

The Babcock School: “Economist” magazine ranks Babcock for first time
“The Economist” magazine has included Wake Forest’s Babcock Graduate School of Management in its ranking of the world’s best MBA schools. The Babcock School was ranked 63rd in the international list of MBA schools and 38th among U.S.-based schools. This is the first year the Babcock School has been ranked by the publication. The Calloway School: NC state treasurer Richard Moore (’82, JD ’86) speaks in Kirby Hall
Richard Moore (’82, JD ’86), the state treasurer of North Carolina, spoke on “Shareholder Responsibility in a Post-Enron World” as part of the Calloway School’s annual Joseph A. Jones Finance Lecture Series held in October. In addition to his Wake Forest degrees, Moore holds a graduate degree in accounting and finance from the London School of Economics. The Jones Lecture series brings distinguished members of the financial community to the University to discuss issues facing finance professionals and educators. Details | Top

The Divinity School: Dean Leonard delivers eulogy for Henlee Barnette (’40)
Dean Bill J. Leonard delivered the eulogy for Henlee Barnette (1911-2004) at Barnette’s funeral, held October 25, 2004, at the Crescent Hill Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. Barnette, a native North Carolinian and 1940 graduate of Wake Forest College, taught Christian ethics at Samford University, Stetson University, the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the University of Louisville. He was given an honorary degree two years ago and his many students included President Hearn. Details | Top

The School of Law: Student organizations address Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Two law student organizations, the Domestic Violence Advocacy Center (DVAC) and Women in Law, recently teamed up to educate the law school community about the consequences of domestic violence in our country and raise funds for a local battered women’s shelter. Details | Top

The School of Medicine: Alumni Weekend a success
More than 400 alumni and friends attended Alumni Weekend events October 8-10. Congratulations go to Distinguished Alumni Award recipients Dr. José Biller (resident alumnus), Dr. James N. Thompson (former dean), Dr. A. Robert Cordell (resident alumnus and emeritus faculty), and Dr. L. ATHLETICS

Basketball gets underway, along with postseason play
November is the time for postseason play for many Deacon teams, plus the start of basketball season. Men’s soccer plays in the ACC Tournament beginning November 10th, and the Deacons should be hosting the NCAA Tournament the next weekend. The women’s ACC Tournament is scheduled for November 3-7, and Wake Forest is expected to play in the NCAA Tournament the following week. Volleyball has November home games against Duke (11/9) and Virginia Tech (11/13) before the ACC Tournament held November 18-21. Cross Country runs in the NCAA Southeast Regional November 13, hoping to qualify for the November 22 NCAA Championship in Terre Haute, Indiana. Football has an important November home game, playing North Carolina on November 13. Wake Forest will host the ACC Field Hockey Tournament November 4-7, and the Deacons are also serving as host of the national semifinals and finals November 19-21. Of course, basketball gets started in November as well. The men’s team has home games against George Washington (11/15), VCU or American (11/18), and Yale (11/22). Coach Mike Petersen’s women’s team has home games against Princeton (11/26 at Reynolds Gym), Stetson (11/28), and Davidson (11/30). Details on all Demon Deacon sports | Top
