Countdown to Commencement
More than 1,500 undergraduate and graduate students will receive diplomas at the University’s 164th commencement ceremony on May 15. Former Virginia Governor Mark Warner will deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary doctor of laws degree. The Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor will deliver the baccalaureate address at 11 a.m. May 14 in Wait Chapel. Details | Top

Wake Forest begins strategic planning process to identify key priorities
Wake Forest has begun a comprehensive 18-month strategic planning process to identify key priorities for strengthening the University. All schools and administrative departments of the Reynolda Campus will participate in the process. "Our new plan will build upon existing strengths and identify areas where we need to improve, through setting priorities, defining strategies, and developing tactics to reach our goals," said President Nathan O. University prepares for potential flu pandemic
President Hatch has directed administrators to develop a highly detailed plan that will prepare Wake Forest for the impact of a potential influenza pandemic on the University's students, faculty and staff, as well as its activities inside and outside the classroom. International concerns about an expanding avian flu virus prompted the planning. Details | Top

Life Trustee T. Eugene Worrell (’40) dies
T. Eugene Worrell (’40), whose name graces the home of the University's Worrell Professional Center for Law and Management and Worrell House in London, died April 20 in Charlottesville, Va.. He was 86. President Hatch recalled Worrell as one of the University's major benefactors and most dedicated alumni. Details | Top

ACADEMICS

President Hatch creates fund for faculty support
President Nathan O. Hatch has announced the establishment of a new plan to attract $10 million in additional funds for faculty support during the next 18 months. Known as the Presidential Trust for Faculty Excellence, the plan will also assist with the purchase of library materials that support faculty research and strengthen Wake Forest's capacity to recruit and retain superior faculty members. Reynolda House will continue its series of Gallery Talks in May in conjunction with the current exhibition, Moving Pictures: American Art and Early Film, 1880-1910. Spaces available for Bill Leonard’s Lifelong Learning class – June 15-16
This is your last chance to sign up for the Wake Forest Alumni Association’s Lifelong Learning program. Featuring Divinity School dean Bill Leonard, “Signs of the Times: Contemporary American Religion in Historical Perspective” will be held June 15-16 on campus. Register for the Alumni Admissions Forum – June 16
Space is still available for the Alumni Admissions Forum on June 16th. The forum is open to alumni families with high school students but is particularly appropriate for rising high school sophomores and juniors. Babcock School: International study tours expand with trip to India
A group of 14 Babcock students and faculty will travel this month to India, the latest addition to the school’s annual program of summer international study tours. The two-week experiential course will introduce students to the business environment in India and help them gain an understanding of the country’s growing importance in the world economy. Calloway School: FASB board member speaks at Hylton lecture
The 20th Annual Hylton Lecture was held April 20th. Katherine Schipper, a member of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), was the guest speaker. She has been the recipient of several grants and awards including the American Accounting Association's Outstanding Educator. The topic of her presentation was "An Academic Accounting Perspective on Financial Reporting Standard Setting." | Top

Divinity School: Editorial: “Family Feud: Baptist Lovers and Fighters of Church State Separation”
“If Baptists ever had a chance for consensus on anything, it had to be religious liberty and its political corollary, the separation of church and state. But turns out this may be the biggest family feud of all.” Read this editorial by Andrew Daugherty(MDiv ‘03) which was published in Baptist Today, May 2006. Details |Top

Medical School: Researchers’ work rebuilding bladders breaks new ground
Anthony Atala, M.D., Director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, describes long-term success with seven young patients whose bladders were grown from the patients’ own cells. This groundbreaking work by Atala and his team attracted immediate national and international media attention. Details | Top

ATHLETICS

Athletics: NCAA Regionals begin
The Wake Forest baseball team is preparing for the ACC Tournament beginning May 24th in Jacksonville, FL. The women's golf team will be hosting the NCAA East Regional May 11-13 at Bryan Park Golf Course in Browns Summit, NC. Both the men's and women's tennis teams will travel for the NCAA Regionals (sites TBA) May 12-15. Both teams could earn a bid to the NCAA final 16 by winning a four-team regional. The men's golf team will also play in an NCAA regional May 18-20 (site TBA). The men's and women's track teams will send representatives to the NCAA regional May 26-28 in Greensboro.
