President-elect Hatch reflects on the legacy of John Paul II
In an article titled “Intellectual and Moral Purpose Still Meet at Catholic Universities,” Wake Forest President-elect Nathan Hatch reflects on the legacy of John Paul II from his unique perspective as a teacher, scholar, and administrator at the University of Notre Dame for three decades and as a leading historian of American religion. A lifelong Presbyterian and the son of a Presbyterian minister, Dr. Hatch also considers the challenges that face Benedict XVI. “If the Roman Catholic Church in America is to retain the loyalty of the next generation of its educated parishioners, particularly young women,” Dr. Hatch writes, “one clear reason will be the inviting forms of intellectual exchange, faith, and service they experience in college.” The article appears in the May 6th edition of the Chronicle of Higher Education and is also available at the Chronicle’s on-line edition. At a Rotary Centennial Celebration held on April 26th, the Winston-Salem Rotary marked its 90th anniversary and welcomed President-elect Nathan Hatch to its ranks. Friedman’s bestselling book, The World is Flat, to suggest that the new global, Web-enabled playing field dictates that “no community can rest on its laurels.” In reference to initiatives such as the new Dell manufacturing facility and the Piedmont Triad Research Park, Dr. Hatch said that Wake Forest and Winston-Salem must continue their paths of innovation and “imagine new opportunities and pursue them relentlessly.” Details | Top

The Divinity School: “A Shelter for Conscience” by Dean Bill Leonard
In a recent opinion editorial, Bill Leonard, Dean of the Divinity School, wrote: “Recent debates over the boundaries of religious liberty are nothing new. Americans have differed on matters of church and state since the earliest days of the colonial period. The seventeenth century Puritan divines John Cotton and Roger Williams personify the differences then and to some extend even now. Cotton, the ultimate establishmentarian, insisted that the state had every right to intervene in religious matters in order to preserve the true faith and protect the innocent ones, those easily led astray by false doctrine or immoral practices.” Read the full text of his “A Shelter for Conscience” here | Top
