Lakshmi Krishnan ('06) named to USA Today All-College Academic Team
Lakshmi Krishnan, a Wake Forest University senior, was one of 20 students named to USA Today's 2006 All-USA College Academic Second Team, which honors students for outstanding intellectual achievement and leadership. The winners were announced in the February 15 issue of USA Today. Details | Top

President Emeritus Hearn's letter to the Wake Forest community
President Emeritus Thomas K. Hearn, Jr. was awarded the Medallion of Merit, the University's highest award for service, at Founder's Day Convocation on February 21st. Read Dr. Hearn's message to the Wake Forest community | Top

James Bullock ('85, MBA '95) named Vice President for University Advancement
President Nathan O. Hatch announced this week that two veteran members of the university administration will begin new roles at the university this summer. Sandra Boyette ('95 MBA), vice president for university advancement at Wake Forest, will leave that position June 30 to begin a new role as senior advisor to the president. Boyette, who joined Wake Forest's staff 25 years ago, was the university's first female vice president when she was named vice president for public affairs in 1989. President Hatch has appointed James Bullock ('85, MBA '95) as vice president for university advancement, effective July 1. Currently, Bullock is an assistant vice president for university advancement and, under Boyette's supervision, directs the university's capital campaign, known as "Honoring the Promise: The Campaign for Wake Forest." He has served on the university's staff for more than 20 years. Details | Top

Wake Forest ranked on Peace Corps' list of top schools
On the Peace Corps' 2006 list of top-producing colleges and universities, Wake Forest ranked 11th among schools with fewer than 5,000 undergraduates. The annual list highlights the institutions with the most alumni currently serving as Peace Corps volunteers. Wake Forest currently has 20 alumni serving. Since the Peace Corps' inception, 167 Wake Forest alumni have joined the ranks of the Peace Corps. Details | Top

ACADEMICS

New minor in entrepreneurship offered
Wake Forest has developed a new, interdisciplinary minor in entrepreneurship that is among the first of its kind in the country. The minor in entrepreneurship and social enterprise was approved by Wake Forest's faculty in November 2005 and is being offered to students for the first time in spring 2006. Details | Top

Accounting team wins top 5 spot
A team of students from the Calloway School of Business and Accountancy was named one of five national winning teams in the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) 3rd Annual xTREME Accounting (xACT) Competition in New York City, January 19-20. The Wake Forest team consisted of juniors Nicole Burnap and Kristen Raliski and sophomores Brandon Prewitt, Andrew Salcetti and Kati Sanford. Sixty-three universities were invited to compete in this year's competition. Five schools were named national finalists: Wake Forest, Indiana University, Louisiana State University, Bentley College and Florida A&M University. Wake Forest is the only private university to make a repeat trip to the national finals. Details | Top

Symposium on medical ethics to be held April 2
A symposium on medical ethics will be held on Sunday, April 2 from 2-5 p.m. in the Benson Center. Nearly one third of students entering Wake Forest express interest in health professions. The ethics of medical care today contain profound questions raised more sharply and frequently than ever before. This symposium will address questions of how to educate potential and current medical students about the ethics of profession and culture, how public policy should intersect with the ethical issues of health care, what legal issues likely will affect the work of physicians in the next two generations, and more. Commencement 2006 registration available for parents
The Commencement 2006 web site is now available. Parents of 2006 graduates can access the site and register for Commencement online. A brochure with more information about Commencement Weekend will be mailed to all parents of seniors in the coming weeks. Commencement web site | Top

"Moving Pictures: American Art and Early Film, 1880-1910" opens March 10
"Moving Pictures" explores the complex relationship between American art and the new medium of film at the beginning of the twentieth century. Featured objects include approximately 80 paintings, photographs, prints, and drawings shown alongside 40 films that demonstrate the fascinating influences these media had upon one another during this period. The exhibition was organized by the Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown, MA, and made possible by the Henry R. Luce Foundation and by an award by the National Endowment for the Arts. 9th annual Irish Festival March 10-17
With traditional Irish flair, Wake Forest will celebrate everything Irish at the 9th annual Wake Forest Irish Festival March 11-17. The festival, which is organized by Wake Forest University Press, the premier publisher of Irish poetry in North America, includes four days of public events plus a St. Patrick's Day Party specifically for the campus community. Register now for Bill Leonard's "Signs of the Times: Contemporary American Religion in Historical Perspective" – June 15-16
The Wake Forest Alumni Association is sponsoring a new pilot program of educational opportunities for Wake Foresters. The first on-campus Lifelong Learning program will be held June 15-16, 2006. "Signs of the Times: Contemporary American Religion in Historical Perspective" will be led by Bill Leonard, Dean of the Divinity School. This course will cover topics such as spirituality in America, the rise of the postmodern church, religious liberty, and more. The course is open to alumni, parents, and friends of Wake Forest. The cost for the course is $400, which includes 2 nights' accommodations in Polo Residence Hall on campus, all course materials, and meals. For local attendees or those staying offsite, the rate for the course is $300. Space is limited – so sign up now! Details | Top


Sign up for the Alumni Admissions Forum – June 16
Do you have high school aged children? If so, you will want to sign up for the Alumni Admissions Forum on June 16th. The forum is open to all high school students but is particularly appropriate for rising high school sophomores and juniors. While we hope that your child is considering Wake Forest, the forum will provide insight into college admissions in general. The day is a blend of general information as well as Wake Forest specific information, which is provided via the optional session in the morning, and a campus tour in the afternoon. Babcock School: Alumnus' gift to fund social, environmental efforts
A generous gift of $1 million from alumnus Tom Dingledine (MBA '78) will be used by the school to enhance academic content that will motivate Wake Forest MBA students to be ethical, social and environmentally responsible business leaders. In his honor, the school has established the Thomas A. Dingledine Fund for Responsible Business. The endowed gift will support faculty members' classroom and research efforts and create new experiential learning opportunities for students. In addition to the $1 million gift, Dingledine has pledged $175,000 over the next five years to assist the school with current operations. Top

Calloway School: Harrison named Kemper Professor of Business
J. Kline Harrison, associate dean and professor of management at the Calloway School of Business and Accountancy, has been named the school's first Kemper Professor of Business. The professorship is funded by a $129,500 grant from the James S. Kemper Foundation, located in Chicago. The foundation is a private institution whose mission is to promote liberal arts education as preparation for life and work, especially in administration and business. Details | Top

Divinity School: Bill and Judith Moyers to speak March 14
Bill Moyers, a broadcast journalist, former public official and Baptist minister, will speak at the Wake Forest University Divinity School's chapel service at 11 a.m. March 14 in Wait Chapel. The event is free and intended for members of the Wake Forest community. Moyers, who most recently served as anchor and managing editor of the PBS series "NOW with Bill Moyers," will deliver the address "A Time for Heresy," focusing on personal religion and the priesthood of the believer. Judith Moyers will lecture at 3 p.m. to students in the Wake Forest Divinity School course "God and the New York Times: Religion in Contemporary America." The lecture is open to students and faculty in the Divinity School, the counseling department and women's studies, and will be held in Wingate Hall, Room 302. Details | Top

Law School: Rose honored at Founders' Day Convocation
Professor Charles P. Rose was recently honored at the University's Founders' Day Convocation as the 2005-06 recipient of the Joseph Branch Excellence in Teaching Award. Details | Top

Medical School: Medical School and YWCA create community collaborative
Childhood obesity will be the first issue that is tackled by a newly formed community alliance that includes Brenner Children's Hospital and the YWCA. Details | Top

ATHLETICS

Athletics: Spring sports schedule
The men's basketball team begins play in the 53rd annual ACC Tournament March 9th at the Greensboro Coliseum. The game will begin at approximately 2:30 p.m. against Florida State. The Wake Forest baseball team, which has been one of the college baseball's top surprise teams so far this year, have several home games, highlighted by home Friday-Sunday series with North Carolina (March 10-12) and Boston College (March 17-19). The nationally-ranked men's tennis team hosts NC State on March 14th at 3:00 and Brown on March 30th at 5:30. The women's tennis team entertains Miami March 25th at 12:00 and Florida State march 26 at 12:00. The Wake Forest men's and women's track teams will get a practice run of sorts for hosting the ACC Championship this spring when they host the Deacon Invitational March 23-25.
