Blake Morant named dean of the Law School
Blake D. Morant has been appointed dean of the Wake Forest School of Law. A Virginia native, Morant is a professor and administrator at Washington and Lee University School of Law. In nearly 30 years as an attorney, Morant has held national leadership positions in legal education, distinguished himself as a teacher-scholar and law school administrator, practiced law and served as an officer in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps. Morant begins serving as dean July 1. He succeeds Robert K. Walsh, who is stepping down after 18 years as dean to teach full-time in the law school. Details | Top

A look back at Commencement 2007
David Brooks, a columnist for The New York Times and a regular analyst on the "NewsHour with Jim Lehrer" and National Public Radio's "All Things Considered," urged graduates to realize their place in the grand sweep of history. Brooks encouraged the graduates to see their lives as connected to all who have come before and to generations yet to be born. Six seniors awarded Fulbright Scholarships
Six Wake Forest University seniors have been awarded Fulbright Scholarships for 2007-2008 to spend one year studying, researching or teaching abroad. The following students are recipients: Audrey Calkins will teach English in Spain; Patricia Crawley will research classical antiquity in Germany; Sarah Maveety will conduct environmental studies research in Peru; Martina Muller will conduct biological research in Sweden; Jennifer Nguyen will teach English in South Korea and Brooks Sterritt will teach English in Germany. Class studies social inequalities in the South
New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward will be among the stops a group of students make as they travel through the Deep South by bus to explore issues of social inequality. The sociology course, Social Stratification in the American Deep South, was designed to help students better understand social, economic and political issues in the South. The two-week field seminar runs from May 25 to June 8. Details | View class' online journals | Top

Kemper grant awarded to Wake Forest
Wake Forest has been awarded a $22,000 grant from the James S. Kemper Foundation to support the Fifth-Year Institute, an intensive incubator program of the University’s Office of Entrepreneurship and Liberal Arts (OELA) that provides year-long fellowships to graduating seniors who have shown entrepreneurial ability and whose new venture projects demonstrate promise. Three Wake Forest seniors, Laura Bullins, Martha Napier and John Pyle, have been awarded post-graduation fellowships for the 2007-2008 Fifth-Year Institute. Details | Top

Secrest Artists Series 2007-08 schedule announced
For more than five decades, Wake Forest has been bringing performing artists of national and international reputation to the university and the community through the Secrest Artists Series. The 2007-2008 season will feature five performances including a classical guitarist, a string trio, a theatrical radio drama, a world famous percussion soloist and an opera singer. Details| Top

Babcock School: Diversity recruiting efforts expanded
As part of a continuing effort to encourage individuals from under-represented populations to pursue graduate business education, Babcock hosted an MBA prep lab presented by Management Leadership for Tomorrow on May 10-11. The event is among several steps the school is taking to enroll a more diverse class. Other efforts include the recent formation of a National Black MBA Collegiate Chapter on campus, and the annual two-week summer program It’s All About Business. Details | Top

Calloway School: Excellence in Entrepreneurship awards given
The Entrepreneurship Society and the Office of Entrepreneurship and Liberal Arts (OELA) recently held the second annual Excellence in Entrepreneurship Awards Banquet, in which they recognized individuals for demonstrating entrepreneurial spirit, creativity, achievement and social responsibility and for serving as inspirations to students, faculty and staff. Divinity School: Dean Bill Leonard in Washington, DC on June 29
Come meet Dean Bill Leonard, members of the Divinity School faculty and friends for updates on Wake Forest's newest professional school on Friday, June 29 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the Grand Hyatt on 1000 H Street NW. Our special guest will be Dan Gilgoff, U.S. News & World Report Senior Editor and author of "The Jesus Machine: How James Dobson, Focus on the Family, and Evangelicals are Winning the Culture War." Medical School: Richard Dean to retire June 30
Richard H. Dean, M.D., who has led Wake Forest University Health Sciences to a premier position in American medical education, will retire June 30 as president and CEO. Details | Top

ATHLETICS

Men's and women's track teams at NCAA Championships
The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams take center stage in June. Wake Forest's Michelle Sikes ('07) and the men's 4x400 relay team have qualified for the June 6-9 NCAA Championships in Sacramento. Based upon their strong performances throughout the outdoor season, Michael Bingham (400m) and Lindsay Neuberger (shot put) received at-large nods into the meet. The event is televised June 8th by CSTV from 8:30-11:30 p.m. and on June 9th by CBS from 1-3 p.m. Also in June, almost every Deacon sports team will host a summer camp. Track Details | Camps | Top

Prosser reflects on unforgettable Kuwait trip
It won't count on his record as a college basketball coach – only in his memory. Wake Forest's Skip Prosser won't forget the week he spent with U.S. soldiers, many of them in their final training exercises before traveling across the Kuwaiti border to Iraq. Details | Top
