Commencement 2006
Former Virginia Governor Mark Warner urged Wake Forest graduates during their May 15 commencement ceremony to take risks without fear of failure and to engage in civil and respectful political debate while eschewing cynicism. A former cell phone executive, Warner also drew laughter from the crowd when he reminded graduates to call their mothers. Warner gave the University's 164th commencement address. Cecilia Solano named interim dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
Cecilia Solano has been appointed as interim dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Solano, who joined Wake Forest's faculty in 1977, is associate dean of the Graduate School and associate professor of psychology. Her appointment follows Gordon A. Melson's retirement as dean and professor of chemistry June 30. He has held those positions for 15 years. Details | Top

Honorary degrees awarded
Wake Forest awarded four honorary degrees at Commencement: Mark Warner, former Governor of Virginia, received an honorary doctor of laws; Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor, a religion professor, received an honorary doctor of divinity degree; Walter Orenstein, associate director of the Emory University Vaccine Center, received an honorary doctor of science degree; and Elias Zerhouni, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), received an honorary doctor of science degree. Seven faculty members retire
Seven retiring faculty members were recognized at Commencement. Retiring from the Reynolda campus are: Marcus Hester (philosophy); Jill McMillan (communication); Gordon Melson (dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences); and Charles Richman (psychology). Retiring from the Bowman Gray campus are: David Bass (internal medicine-pulmonary, critical care, allergy and immunologic diseases); Kenneth Haisty (internal medicine-cardiology); and Paul Meis (obstetrics and gynecology-maternal/fetal medicine). Preschoolers slow to call people "mean," says Wake Forest psychologist
Young children are reluctant to describe someone as mean, according to new research by Wake Forest psychologist Janet Boseovski. Boseovski found that young children, ages 3 to 6, were willing to generalize that a person is good or nice or kind because they were nice one time. But, the children in the study responded to negative information differently. Details | Top
ACC collaborative funds study abroad programs
The Atlantic Coast Conference International Academic Collaborative (ACC/IAC) has awarded two grants to Wake Forest University faculty and staff for international study programs. The management committee of the ACC/IAC, made up of chief international officers at 11 ACC institutions, selected the two projects for funding from a variety of proposals submitted by ACC schools. "Cinema Under the Stars" debuts June 17
"Cinema Under the Stars" debuts June 17 at Reynolda House, Museum of American Art with Spike Lee's film, "Do the Right Thing," "Bonnie and Clyde" (6/24), "Ragtime" (7/1), and "Cinema Paradiso" (7/8). Gates open at 8 p.m., films begin at 9 p.m. Admission is $5, $3 for members and students. "Cinema Under the Stars" coincides with the Museum's current exhibition, "Moving Pictures: American Art and Early Film, 1880 – 1910" and is co-sponsored by the North Carolina School of the Arts. Athletics: June sports news
The men's golf team put together four solid rounds of play to finish tied for third in the NCAA Golf Championship, the Deacons' best finish since 1997. Senior Kyle Reifers finished tied for second place in the individual race. The men's and women's track teams will send individuals to the NCAA Championships June 7-10 in Sacramento, CA.
