| Palmer @ Convocation Arnold Palmer (’51, LL.D. ’70) delivers commencement address
Arnold Palmer (’51, LL.D. ’70), one of the most beloved golf legends of all time and a Wake Forest alumnus, shared some secrets to success with the 2005 graduating class during his commencement address, challenging them to make a difference in their world. Details | Transcript | Top

Campaign goal reached early
During the 2005 commencement exercises, President Hearn announced that Wake Forest has met its $600 million capital campaign goal early. Launched publicly in 2001, the “Honoring the Promise” capital campaign will continue as scheduled through June 2006, with a special focus on endowment gifts that provide for student financial aid and faculty support, areas in which Wake Forest has not yet raised the full amount sought. ACADEMICS

Honorary degrees awarded at commencement
Wake Forest awarded three honorary degrees during its Monday, May 16th commencement ceremony held on the Thomas K. Hearn, Jr., Plaza (the Quad). Oliver W. Hill, Sr., a civil rights attorney and Presidential Medal of Honor recipient, was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree. Dr. Bernard Lown, a Nobel laureate and professor of cardiology emeritus at Harvard School of Public Health, received an honorary doctor of science degree. Michael D. Piscal (’88), president and founder of the nonprofit organization Inner City Education Foundation (ICEF), was given an honorary doctor of humanities degree. Details | Top

Retiring faculty members recognized
Faculty retiring from Wake Forest University were recognized during the commencement ceremony. Retiring Reynolda Campus faculty include Christa E. Carollo, senior lecturer in German; James H. Dodding, professor of theatre; James C. Makens, associate professor of management; and Milorad R. Margitic, professor of Romance languages. Retiring Bowman Gray Campus faculty include Louis S. Kucera, professor of microbiology and immunology; Herman H. Samson III, professor of physiology and pharmacology; and B. Todd Troost, professor of neurology. | Top

Vanguard Collecting symposium at Reynolda House
On Friday, June 17 and Saturday, June 18, 2005, the symposium Vanguard Collecting: American Art in the 1960s will explore the creation of the core Reynolda House collection in the mid- to late-1960s, with particular emphasis on the development of American art history during the period. Museum Board President Barbara Babcock Millhouse (L.H.D. ’88) will host the symposium, featuring leading American art historians Patricia Hills ( Boston University), Roger Stein ( University of Virginia), Wendy Bellion ( University of Delaware), and David Lubin ( Wake Forest University). Last call to register for the June 17th Alumni Admissions Forum
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions and the Office of Alumni Activities are pleased to sponsor an annual forum for alumni and their college-bound children to assist in the college search process. The Alumni Admissions Forum, held on Friday, June 17th, is targeted to rising high school sophomores and juniors and will provide insight into finding the right college, writing winning essays, completing applications, and financing a college education. | Asian Games |Asian games exhibit to open at Museum of Anthropology
Many of the games most common to the United States have found their way here from other parts of the world. “Asian Games: The Art of the Contest,” an exhibit opening Tuesday, May 31st at the Museum of Anthropology, highlights the paramount importance of Asia as a source of many games, including chess, backgammon, parcheesi, playing cards, and polo. The exhibit runs through Tuesday, August 16th. Details | Top

Special offer—limited edition Wake Forest print available
Special offer of Wake Forest art: a new, limited edition color print of the Wake Forest campus by renowned artist Parks Pegram Duffey III is now available. This print, completed in 2005, includes architectural renderings of buildings, whimsical remembrances of people and events, and a truly original and evocative depiction of the campus. Ann Fitzsimmons (P ’07) and Sally Blackiston (P ’07) have commissioned Parks to create this print, and 10% of the net profits will be donated to the University. The Babcock School: Professors cited in Washington Post article
A Wake Forest MBA research team recently presented an innovative approach to viewing the future now. The research, conducted by Gary Shoesmith, Sherry Jarrell, and Garst Reese (’05), was featured on the front page of the May 22, 2005, edition of the Washington Post in an article title “A Glimpse of Older America.” The research, “Insights into U.S. Spending Patterns in the Years 2020 and 2025: Evidence from Six Metropolitan Statistical Areas,” provides creative insights into baby boomers’ future spending habits. The Calloway School: Reznick Group pledges $250,000 to WFU accounting program
The Reznick Group, a national accounting, tax, and business advisory firm, has pledged $250,000 to the accounting program at Wake Forest University’s Calloway School of Business and Accountancy. Established in 1977, the Reznick Group is ranked among the top twenty accounting firms in the United States. Details | Top

The Graduate School: 2005 Hooding and Awards Ceremony
The Graduate School was pleased to have Mitchell E. Robinson (Ph.D. ’83) as the guest speaker at the 2005 Hooding and Awards Ceremony. Robinson is currently associate dean of the Graduate School and professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University. | Top

ATHLETICS

| Men's Golf |Three Deacon teams active in June
Only three Wake Forest teams are in action in June. The men’s golf team is competing in the NCAA Championships on June 1-4 at Cave Valley Golf Club near Baltimore. The Demon Deacons, who own three NCAA titles, are coming off a win at the NCAA East Regional. From June 8-11, selected members of the Wake Forest men’s and women’s track and field teams will be participating in the NCAA Championships in Sacramento. Details on all Wake Forest sports | Top
