Patel named Dean of the Babcock School
Ajay PatelWake Forest University has appointed Dr. Ajay Patel as dean of the Babcock Graduate School of Management. Wake Forest Provost and Acting President William C. Gordon announced Patel's appointment April 6 during a press briefing at the University. Since August 2003, Patel has served as interim dean of the Babcock School, which consistently ranks among the nation's top accredited graduate schools of business. He has been a faculty member at the Babcock School for 11 years and associate dean for faculty and alumni affairs for the past two years. Details »

Kirby Wing of Calloway Hall dedicated
The Calloway School dedicated its new $14 million building during a ceremony April 1 in the building's atrium. Kirby Hall, named after a $5 million donation from the F. M. Kirby Foundation, opened in August. Groundbreaking for the 57,000-square-foot facility was held in October 2001. It is part of the newly named Calloway Center for Business, Mathematics, and Computer Science, which also consists of West Hall, home to the math and computer science departments. Details »

Students help at-risk elementary school students
In partnership with Old Town Elementary School in Winston-Salem, two students plan to provide desks, chairs, school supplies, and tutoring help to at-risk students. The project, called DESK, or Discovering Education through Student Knowledge, was developed by seniors Elizabeth Eubank and Tierney Kraft after a discussion with a fifth grade teacher who was discouraged that so few of her students were doing well in math. The teacher suggested that with a good study environment at home, the students could be more successful. Details »

South African poets to speak
Bringing their South African heritage into context through poetry, poets Yvette Christiansė and Ingrid de Kok will read from their works at the Ring Theatre in Scales Fine Arts Center April 13 at 7:30 p.m. A reception will follow the reading. An informal discussion with the poets about poetry and politics will also be held at 11 a.m. in DeTamble Auditorium in Tribble Hall. Both the reading and discussion, which are sponsored by Wake Forest's Women's and Gender Studies Program, are free and open to the public. Details »

ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS

Alumni Admissions Forum: June 18
Alumni in AdmissionsThe Office of Undergraduate Admissions and the Office of Alumni Activities are pleased to sponsor an annual forum on June 18 for alumni and their college-bound children to assist in the college search process. The forum is targeted to rising high school sophomores and juniors. While we hope that your child is considering Wake Forest, the forum will provide insight into college admissions in general. It focuses on finding the right college, writing winning essays, completing applications, and financing a college education. Details and registration »

Admitted Student Receptions hosted in April
In conjunction with the Alumni Clubs office and the Alumni in Admissions program, the Admissions office is holding Admitted Student Receptions during the month of April. These receptions are for students who have been accepted to Wake Forest but have not yet enrolled. These receptions allow students to learn more about the University and its community from Wake Forest alumni, staff members, and other accepted students. There is also a "Campus Day" on April 19 for accepted students. For more information on "Campus Day", please contact the Admissions Office at (336) 758-5201.

New book of vintage Wake Forest photographs available
The enduring spirit of Wake Forest University is celebrated in a new book that features more than 200 vintage photographs. "Wake Forest University" explores the founding of the college, its move to Winston-Salem, and its development into a modern university beginning in the 1960s. Thomas K. Hearn, III, son of President Thomas K. Hearn, Jr., began the book as a gift for his father, who celebrated his 20th year as president in the fall of 2003. Contributors to the book include Gene Capps, Director of the Wake Forest College Birthplace Museum; former Chaplain Edgar D. Christman ('50, JD '53); Dr. Edwin Hendricks, professor of history; and Dr. Edwin G. Wilson ('43), provost emeritus and professor of English. Proceeds from the book will be donated to the Louise Patton Hearn Scholarship Fund at Wake Forest. Details »

Spring musical: "Into the Woods"
"Into the Woods," a production of Wake Forest University Theatre, will be performed in Brendle Recital Hall on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday--April 8, 9, and 10. All performances will be at 7:30 p.m. The play opened on April 2 in the MainStage Theatre in Scales Fine Arts Center. While the theatre was empty April 3, a fire erupted on the set. The set and stage were damaged by fire, water, and smoke; no one was injured in the incident. To order tickets, the Wake Forest Theatre Box Office will be open from noon to 5 p.m. each weekday. "Ghost Tour: Legends of Wake Forest University"
"Ghost Tour: Legends of Wake Forest University" is a senior honors project by Nicole McNamara ('04). This play, about the legends and ghost stories at Wake Forest, is being produced as a fundraiser for the theatre department to create a fund for creative projects as well as to renovate equipment in the theaters. Performances will be held April 15 at 7:30 p.m.; April 16-17 at 5:00 and 7:30 p.m.; and April 18 at 2 p.m. Performances will take place in the Ring Theatre, Scales Fine Arts Center; the play lasts approximately one hour and the cost of tickets is $11. Tickets will go on sale April 12 through the Wake Forest Theatre Box Office at (336) 758-5295.

The Babcock School
WorrellAs the elevator doors close, a new world of opportunity opens. Entrepreneurs have exactly two minutes to make it to the top. Every second counts. MBA students from the nation's top-notch universities will try to convince venture capitalists to invest in their business plans during the 5th Annual Babcock Elevator Competition. Details »

The Calloway School of Business and Accountancy
The Calloway School has received a $63,000 grant to support the transition of many duties of the Forsyth County Working Families Partnership to the Forsyth County United Way. The Jessie Ball duPont Religious, Charitable, and Educational Fund awarded the grant. The Forsyth County Working Families Partnership, of which Wake Forest is a member, increases taxpayers' awareness of the often-unclaimed Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), offers free tax preparation, and helps families link tax refunds with asset-building strategies. The Divinity School
The Rev. Thomas Keating, a Cistercian Trappist priest, monk and former abbot, lead a program April 5-6 focused on "Prayer, Peace and Dialogue." The program was sponsored by the Wake Forest Divinity School. Keating is an internationally renowned leader in the centering prayer movement and founder of Contemplative Outreach, an organization that teaches centering prayer and provides a support system to its practitioners. The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
This year eighty-seven graduate students participated in the Graduate Student Research Day. Seventy-seven posters were presented by students from seventeen programs. Two features new to the Graduate Student Research Day included sponsorship by the biotechnology company, Targacept Inc., and the WFU Women's Health Center of Excellence, and interdisciplinary posters on the topics of bioinformatics presented by students from biochemistry, computer science, molecular medicine, physics, and biology.

The School of Law
The School of Law is pleased to announce the appointment of Sidney A. Shapiro as the new University Distinguished Chair in Law. Shapiro is a national scholar and expert in administrative law and regulatory policy. He comes to Wake Forest from the University of Kansas, where he is the John M. Rounds Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Research. Details »

The School of Medicine
Congratulations to the Class of 2004! On Thursday, March 18, medical students received news of their residency selections. Upon receiving the news, students attended a luncheon at Bridger Field House, where they shared their destinations and areas of study with classmates, and an all-class match party that evening. This year, 28 students matched at the School of Medicine.

ATHLETICS

Spring sports update
Demon DeaconSpring sports take front and center in April. The week of April 5-11, women's tennis has home matches vs. Virginia (4/10) and Maryland (4/11). Baseball hosts Davidson (4/13) and UNC-Asheville (4/20) before hosting a three-game series with Maryland (4/23-25). Baseball also has home games vs. VCU (4/27) and Elon (4/28).
