Wake Forest plays in the Orange Bowl; Orange Bowl photos and blog
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons ended their historic season on January 2 at the Orange Bowl in Miami with a 24-13 loss to the Louisville Cardinals. They ended the finest season in Wake Forest football history at 11-3 with the school's first trip to a Bowl Championship Series game. Game Recap » Around 20,000 Wake Forest alumni, parents, students, faculty, and friends converged in Miami to enjoy the festivities surrounding the Orange Bowl - the largest gathering of Wake Foresters in history. Read President Hatch's column from the Miami Herald
A column written by President Nathan O. Hatch appeared in the Miami Herald on December 27. "In this nation where dreams can still be realized, there is no greater beacon of opportunity than America's colleges and universities," he wrote. Associated Press names Jim Grobe the Coach of the Year
Jim Grobe held Wake Forest together after a couple of potentially devastating injuries, refused to let his players feel sorry for themselves, and turned the perennially downtrodden Demon Deacons into champions. For orchestrating one of the most surprising turnarounds in college football - and the best season in Wake Forest's 105-year football history - Grobe was honored as The Associated Press Coach of the Year on December 20. "Demon Deacons charm Orange Bowl"
There were many articles devoted to Wake Forest's Orange Bowl appearance, but one of the most heartwarming was "Demon Deacons charm Orange Bowl," by Dave Joseph of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "Suddenly, a BCS game didn't have to be life-and-death to be appealing. It didn't have to come down to a coach's job on the line. It didn't have to feature behemoths like Florida State or Miami. It could star a small, tie-dyed school from Winston-Salem, N.C. And it may wind up rivaling the best bowl game you'll see this season. Yes, the favored Cardinals won, scoring 14 fourth-quarter points to beat the Demon Deacons 24-13. But how could you not come away from this game enamored by the Demon Deacons? Wake Forest. Calloway students lead nation in CPA exam pass rate
Graduates of the Calloway School of Business and Accountancy rank first in the nation for their performance on the 2005 Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam, the most recent scores available from the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA). Wake Forest candidates have consistently performed well on the exam, ranking first in the nation for five years and second in the nation for three years. This is the second consecutive year Calloway School students have been ranked first in the nation since the exam was reformatted in 2004. Details | Top

ACADEMICS

American Indian conference to be held January 18-20
Strengthening education, spirituality, health and entrepreneurship among American Indian women and their communities will be the focus of a four-day conference titled “Celebrating Women of Proud Nations: Creating & Sustaining Hope for American Indian Women & Their Families” January 18-21. The conference will feature cultural events, large group sessions, focus-action groups and workshops with American Indian community leaders and scholars from numerous Southeastern and other tribal nations. Wake Forest signs agreement with Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
A Memorandum of Understanding promoting education, patient care and research for the benefit of American Indian nations, was signed between Wake Forest University, Western Carolina University and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) in November. The agreement promotes an interdisciplinary project that includes the exchange of faculty and resources for the development of online courses for a cultural health certificate and other educational programs, joint research activities, and the exchange of scholars for seminars, conferences and other academic meetings. Exhibition Opening: "Grandma Moses: Grandmother to the Nation"
The exhibition, Grandma Moses: Grandmother to the Nation, opens with a party for the general public with music, a cash bar, and admission to the entire museum. The exhibition will be on display in the Mary and Charlie Babcock Wing at Reynolda House through April 22, 2007. The exhibition opens Friday, January 26, 2007, from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Admission is $5, Members/students free. This exhibition was organized by The Fenimore Art Museum, Cooperstown, New York. Wake Forest Society weekend set for February 2-3
Members of the Wake Forest Society will meet on campus February 2-3, 2007 for a weekend of informational and social events. The Wake Forest Society is comprised of alumni, parents, and friends who have previously served on one of the volunteer boards or councils of the Reynolda Campus. The Wake Forest Society weekend will feature a celebration of athletics on Friday, February 2 at 4 p.m. in Wait Chapel. That celebration will be open to the entire Wake Forest community as well. Wake Forest Society members will receive additional information in the coming weeks. | Top

Babcock School: Future home of Charlotte MBA program unveiled
On December 6, Wachovia Corporation unveiled the design of its planned cultural-business campus in uptown Charlotte. The bank’s 48-story building on the corner of First and South Tryon streets will include approximately 30,000 square feet of space for Babcock classrooms and offices. The project involves a rich mix of uses, including museums, condominiums, retail shops, and business and educational space. Details | Top

Calloway School: Aldhizer, Cotter appointed to professorships in the Calloway School
George R. Aldhizer III and James F. Cotter have been appointed to two named professorships within the Calloway School of Business and Accountancy. Aldhizer has been named the PricewaterhouseCoopers Professor of Academic Excellence. Cotter has been named the Benson-Pruitt Professor. Each professorship carries an annual stipend and annual additional funds to be used in support of teaching and research. Details | Top

Divinity School: First Divinity student named to Theological Fellowship
First year student Cameron Mason (M.Div '09), has been named a Congregational Fellow by the Fund for Theological Education (FTE). The Fellowship will provide her with significant financial support, which will be matched by her home congregation, Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. "I am very grateful for FTE's vision and dedication to making divinity school possible," said Mason. "My church's support, financially and spiritually, as well as their faith in my potential for ministry, gives me extra encouragement." Details | Top

Graduate School: Students bring Christmas cheer to local children
On the Saturday after their finals, 25 students from the Graduate School joined the Jaycees and the Salvation Army to bring "Christmas Cheer" to 50 Winston-Salem children. Each child was escorted by a graduate student or Jaycees member to activities including a complimentary breakfast, a visit and picture with Santa (played by Michael Blanks, graduate student in Molecular Genetics), a shopping spree for toys and family gifts totaling $135 per child, and more. The Winston Salem Jaycees and the WFU Graduate Student Association raised more than $7,200 to sponsor | Top

Medical School: Dean Applegate chosen as chair-elect of major medical board
William B. Applegate, M.D., M.P.H., dean of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, has been chosen chair-elect of a major medical society board. He will become chairman of the American College of Physicians Board of Regents in 2008. Details | Top

ATHLETICS

Athletics: ACC basketball begins!
The Wake Forest men's and women's basketball teams dive head first into ACC play in January. Coach Skip Prosser's team has home games vs. Boston College (1/9), NC State (1/13), North Carolina (1/24) and Georgia Tech (1/30). Coach Mike Petersen's women's team has home contests vs. Clemson (1/5), UNC-Asheville (1/8), Virginia Tech (1/18), Winston-Salem State (1/26) and Georgia Tech (1/28).
