Daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. to speak at
Wake Forest

Bernice King, the youngest daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., will speak at Wake Forest on January 16 as part of a week-long celebration of the civil rights leader's legacy sponsored by Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State University. This is the fifth year Wake Forest has collaborated with Winston-Salem State to present a series of events surrounding Martin Luther King Jr. Day. King will present the keynote address "On Common Ground" at 7 p.m. in Wait Chapel. The event is free and open to the public. Details | Top

Wake Forest students participate in service trips over winter break
Fifty-four students are living out the spirit of Wake Forest's motto "Pro Humanitate" (for humanity) and are spending a portion of their holiday break overseas serving the poor and disadvantaged in India, South Africa, Vietnam, and helping repair damage from Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi. Wake Forest's international service trips began in 1994 through the efforts of a Wake Forest student who had dreamed of meeting Mother Teresa and working among her Missionaries of Charity. Details » Students working the Katrina relief mission in the Pascagoula, Mississippi, area will be building storage buildings at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School and participating in activities for children. ACADEMICS

Counseling professor honored by University of Alabama at Birmingham
Samuel T. Gladding (’67, MAEd ’71), professor and chair of the department of counseling, has been named by the University of Alabama at Birmingham's (UAB) counselor education program to its Hall of Fame. Gladding, who taught at UAB from 1984 to 1990, is the first person selected to receive this honor. The award is presented to UAB professors and students who have distinguished themselves in the counseling profession. Details | Top

Commencement 2006 information for parents
Information about Commencement Weekend, May 13-15, including a link to online Commencement registration, will be available on the Parents' Page in late January. In addition, a brochure with more information about the Baccalaureate and Commencement ceremonies will be mailed to all parents of seniors in February. Check the Parents’ Page later this month and look for the brochure to be mailed shortly. Details | Top

Reunion class committees forming
Attention undergraduate alumni! Reunion classes (ending in 1’s and 6’s) are starting to form reunion committees to help contact classmates about your reunions next fall. The date for Homecoming 2006 is not yet available, as it is set based on the 2006 football schedule; a final date should be set in mid- to late-January. “Turner” & “Paper, Leather, Wood” on exhibit at Reynolda House
“J.M.W. Turner and Frederic Church: An Atlantic Conversation” is on view at Reynolda House through February 5 featuring a Turner painting from the Tate Britain. Join Curator Tom Denenberg for a gallery talk January 10, 5:30-6:30 pm. Also on exhibit is “Paper, Leather, Wood: Materials and African American Art of the Twentieth Century,” showcasing masterworks by African American artists. Concert schedule for January and February
The Department of Music will present seven concerts in January and February, including Senior Voice recitals, faculty performances, and competitions. All concerts will be held in Wake Forest's Brendle Recital Hall, unless otherwise noted, and are free and open to the public. Details | Top

Women’s Wellness Weekend at The Greenbrier March 3-5
Start your new year off with Wake Forest women as they celebrate the 60th anniversary of women at Wake Forest at an inaugural lifelong learning event. This weekend getaway is open to women looking to relax, rejuvenate, and have some fun! An array of speakers have been selected for their ability to help women become more well-versed in women's health issues, gain spiritual and mental growth, learn techniques on stress reduction, and much more. Mark your calendars for the 2006 Trek to the Old Campus, which will take place the weekend of March 31-April 1, 2006. Go back to the town of Wake Forest for a weekend with friends and classmates to honor the heritage and history of Wake Forest. Travel to Ireland for the 2006 Ryder Cup
Wake Forest is sponsoring a trip to the 2006 Ryder Cup at Ireland’s K Club (located outside of Dublin), followed by golf on some of Ireland’s finest link courses. The dates of the trip are September 19-29. The trip is being hosted and organized by Eoghan O’Connell (’90) of Global Golf Links. Eoghan was an All-American golfer at Wake Forest in 1988 and a member of the 1989 Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup teams. A native of Killarney, Ireland, Eoghan has hosted many trips to Ireland as well as Scotland. The Divinity School: Op-ed: churches deserve clarity on tax rules
“May ministers preach on the great issues of the day during election season and keep their churches' tax-exempt status? Yes. But in the wake of recent media reports about an Internal Revenue Service investigation of All Saints Church in Pasadena, Calif., the IRS should give congregations more specific guidance about how to avoid its scrutiny and demonstrate that it enforces its rules uniformly.” Read more from Melissa Rogers, a visiting professor of religion and public policy, in The Baltimore Sun. The Medical School: New Department of Physician Assistant Studies created
The School of Medicine has created a new Department of Physician Assistant Studies, and James A. Van Rhee, M.P.A.S., PA-C, will become associate professor and chairman of that department, as well as head of the Physician Assistant Program, on May 1. He is currently chairman and associate professor of the Physician Assistant Department at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. Details | Top

ATHLETICS

Basketball takes center stage
January is the start of ACC play for the Demon Deacon men's and women's basketball teams. The nationally-ranked men's team kicks off league play 1/8 with #1 ranked Duke at Lawrence Joel Coliseum. Wake Forest also has January home games with Georgia Tech (1/18), Florida State (1/24) and Virginia Tech (1/28). Coach Mike Petersen's women's team plays at home in January against NC State (1/7), Morgan State (1/11), Virginia Tech (1/19), North Carolina (1/27) and Maryland (1/29). Men's and women's indoor track compete twice in January -- both on the road in Virginia. Men's tennis kicks off its spring season late in January with home matches against East Tennessee State and East Carolina (both on 1/28), and Northwestern (1/29). Details | Top
