U.S. Senator Richard Burr ('78) to speak at Founders' Day Convocation
U.S. Senator Richard Burr ('78) will deliver the Founders' Day Convocation address on February 21 in Wait Chapel. The event is free and open to the public. Burr began his career in public office in 1994 when he became the first Republican in 20 years to represent the 5th Congressional District of North Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives. He served a total of five terms in the House, during which he became vice chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and a leading voice on health care and energy issues. Also during the convocation ceremony, two individuals will be recognized with Medallion of Merit, the University's highest honor: President Emeritus Thomas K. Hearn, Jr. and Life Trustee T. Eugene Worrell ('40). Details | Top

Lilly Grant extends support for the Pro Humanitate Center
In a show of continued support for the vocational exploration programs it helped to create at Wake Forest, Lilly Endowment Inc. of Indianapolis has awarded a $498,491 grant to the University. The grant will help continue work at Wake Forest's Pro Humanitate Center, which offers vocational exploration for undergraduate students. The initial grant, awarded in 2002, provided funding for the center for five years. The new grant, which requires Wake Forest to provide matching funds, will extend the work of the center for at least three years. Details | Top

Dates for Homecoming, Family Weekend announced
Dates for fall event weekends have been announced. Homecoming will be held the weekend of September 29-30. Family Weekend will be held October 6-7. President's Weekend (for members of University Gift Clubs) will be held November 3-4. Information about these events will be available later this summer, but mark your calendars now! | Top

ACADEMICS

Kairoff CD lauded as one of top 25 best recordings of 2005
A recording by music professor and concert pianist Peter Kairoff of the music of American composer George Whitefield Chadwick was included on ArkivMusic's list of the top 25 recordings of 2005. "American Character: Piano Music of George Whitefield Chadwick" was the third in Kairoff's series of recordings highlighting little-known works by American composers of the 19th century. Commencement 2006 registration available for parents
The Commencement 2006 web site is now available. Parents of 2006 graduates can access the site and register for Commencement online. A brochure with more information about Commencement Weekend, which will include the names of Baccalaureate and Commencement speakers, will be mailed to all parents of seniors in February. "Cool Nights, Hot Jazz" and "Art of the African Diaspora" at Reynolda House
Reynolda House is featuring a "Cool Nights, Hot Jazz Concert Series:" (Todd Wright Quartet on 2/3; Seth Trachy's Potluck Trio on 2/17, and Ken Rhodes Trio on 2/26). Celebrate Black History Month at Reynolda House's annual African American Read-In on 2/6 followed by a tour of the exhibition "Paper, Leather, Wood: Materials and African American Art of the Twentieth Century," by Assistant Curator Allison Slaby. Join Belinda Tate, Curator and Director of Diggs Gallery, Winston-Salem State University, for her lecture series, "Art of the African Diaspora," on 2/20 and 2/27. Details | Top

Individual exhibitions featured at Hanes art gallery
The Charlotte and Philip Hanes Art Gallery will present an exhibit featuring three individual exhibitions by Edith Isaac-Rose, Elyse Defoor and DUZA (the artist's working name). The exhibit will run from February 8 until March 19. An opening reception will be held at 5 p.m. February 8 in the gallery. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. Details | Top

Moravian exhibit at Museum of Anthropology
The Museum of Anthropology is featuring a new exhibit "Treasures from a Moravian Attic: Native American Objects from the Wachovia Historical Society Collection." The exhibit will run until May 13 and features the stories and exceptional objects of several 19th and 20th century explorers, archaeologists and Moravian collectors. Details | Top

University Theatre production of "Gint"
The Wake Forest University Theatre will perform "Gint" by Romulus Linney. Performances will be held at the MainStage Theatre in Scales Fine Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. February 10-11 and 15-18 and at 2 p.m. February 19. "Gint" is a re-telling of Ibsen's classic tale "Peer Gynt" and tells the story of Pete Gint, a young man living in the Appalachian Mountains in 1917. Details | Top

Student play "Awakenings" features grand illusion
"Awakening," an original one-man show incorporating drama, magic and illusion, will debut at 7:30 p.m. February 24 in the MainStage Theatre in Scales Fine Arts Center. Performances will also be held at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on February 25 and 2:30 p.m. on February 26. The performance is suitable for families. During intermission, Wake Forest students will perform magic tricks in the lobby. Written and produced by Wake Forest students Matt Gutschick ('06) and Ben Whiting ('06), "Awakening" incorporates David Copperfield-style grand illusion as its main narrative tool. Details | Top

Mark your calendars for the 2006 Trek to the Old Campus!
Mark your calendars for the 2006 Trek to the Old Campus, which will take place the weekend of March 31-April 1, 2006. Go back to the town of Wake Forest for a weekend with friends and classmates to honor the heritage and history of Wake Forest. Additional details on the 2006 Trek will be available after the first of the year. | Top

Stay at the Flow House in Vienna this summer
Wake Forest's Flow House in Vienna, Austria is available for Wake Foresters to stay May 25-28 and June 11-30, 2006. Guests are required to stay at least two nights and no more than five nights. Rates for alumni are as follows: single ($50); double ($80); triple ($90); quadruple ($100); linens are provided. Babcock School: Summit draws top marketing minds
The 2006 Wake Forest MBA Marketing Summit will be held February 9-11. The Summit includes the 16th annual MBA Marketing Case Competition, which features competing teams from UCLA, Northwestern, Michigan, Texas, Vanderbilt, Washington, Wisconsin and Wake Forest. The Summit's Marketing Forum will bring together top marketing executives from BellSouth, Coca-Cola, Sonic, Verizon and Yahoo! for a panel discussion on how innovation and creativity can drive brand sustainability. Babcock School: U.S. treasurer heads Diversity Weekend events
Anna Escobedo Cabral, the treasurer of the United States, will deliver the keynote address for this year's Diversity Weekend events on Friday, February 17, at the Worrell Professional Center. Cabral, who assumed duties as treasurer in 2004, has worked in a variety of positions on behalf of Latino and Hispanic interests and in congressional staff leadership roles in Washington. Her appearance highlights two days of events on February 17-18 that will examine how profound demographic changes are affecting management professionals. Details | Top

Divinity School: Trible Lecture Series to be held 2/28-March 1
The Phyllis Trible Lecture series "Gender, Sexuality, and Faith" will be held February 28-March 1, 2006. Guest lecturers include: Elizabeth Bounds, Candler School of Theology, Emory University; Kelly Brown Douglas, Goucher College; and Rosemary R. Ruether, Pacific School of Religion. Details | Top

Graduate School of Arts and Sciences: Graduate School Forum held
The Graduate School held its ninth Graduate Student Forum on January 27th. Ninety-three students from both campuses met to discuss professional careers with facilitators from local colleges and universities (Salem College, UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Chapel Hill), the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system and government, and companies in the area (R.J. Reynolds, Applied HR Solutions, Gallo & Associates, Trans Tech Pharma, and Wachovia). In addition, there were several facilitators from the Wake Forest community. This event provides an educational and enjoyable opportunity for graduate students to further their professional development. | Top

Law School: Former Governor and U.S. Senator to lecture March 1
David Pryor, founding dean of the Clinton School of Public Service and former Arkansas Governor and U.S. Senator, will deliver the Annual Jeff Rupe Memorial Lecture at noon on March 1 in the Law School's large courtroom/auditorium. Details | Top

Medical School: Building human organs in the lab
Wake Forest University Health Sciences and Tengion Inc. established major agreements for funding research to create "neo-organs" and tissues aimed at treating human diseases and disabilities. Details | Top
