Senior named Rhodes Scholar
Michelle Sikes '07, captain of the women's track and cross country teams, has been named a Rhodes Scholar. Sikes, a senior from Lakewood, Ohio, also conducts health policy research and is designing alternative economic models for the US organ donation system. She is among 32 Americans chosen by the Rhodes Trust to study at England's Oxford University in 2007 as Rhodes Scholars. Details | Top

ACC Football Champs; Deacs to take on Louisville in Orange Bowl
The Demon Deacons defeated the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 9-6 on Saturday, December 2 to win the ACC Championship title. They face Louisville in the FedEx Orange Bowl in Miami on January 2 at 8 p.m. Ticket and Travel Information | Orange Bowl Details |Top

President emeritus, Emily Herring Wilson win awards
Thomas K. Hearn Jr., president emeritus, received the North Carolina Award, the state's highest civilian honor, for public service. Emily Herring Wilson MA '62 was recognized for her contributions to literature. President Emeritus Hearn was also presented with a lifetime achievement award at the Triad National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon, a separate ceremony. Wilson Details | Hearn Details | Top

Student group wins service award
Helping to Overcome Physical Expectations (HOPE), a student organization, was awarded the Strategic Partner Award by The Children's Center for the Physically Disabled. The award has been given annually since 1999 to the group or individual with the most significant impact on the quality of the Children's Center's programming. HOPE is a group of 170 Wake Forest student volunteers who work to enrich the lives of mentally and/or physically disabled children in the Winston-Salem area. Details | Top

Elizabeth Phillips Award established
Elizabeth Phillips, one of the earliest female faculty members, is being honored with the establishment of an award in her name. Phillips, professor emerita of English, was a member of the Wake Forest faculty from 1957 to 1989. The first Elizabeth Phillips Award will be presented next spring by the University's women's and gender studies program. Details | Top

"For Whose Humanity" speakers announced
Four renowned speakers whose work has raised questions and issues regarding how we serve humanity will visit Wake Forest in February as part of the "For Whose Humanity?" Pro Humanitate Film & Speaker Series. Funded by a grant by the Lilly Endowment, the four-week series will feature scientist Keith Campbell, filmmaker Keith Beauchamp, Sister Helen Prejean and real-life hero Paul Rusesabagina. In Every Issue... 

"A Christmas Memory" at Reynolda House
Robin Voiers will perform in Truman Capote's "A Christmas Memory" on Friday, December 15, 2006 at 8 p.m., and Saturday, December 16 and Sunday, December 17 at 5 p.m. at Reynolda House Museum of American Art. The production is directed by William Voiers and is recommended for children age 10 and above. Largely autobiographical, "A Christmas Memory" is about a southern writer's poignant remembrances of Christmas with his beloved cousin, Sook. Admission is $10, Members/students $8. Details | Top

Faculty/Staff art exhibit
The work of 15 faculty/staff artists as well as dance photography will be the focus of the next exhibitions featured at Wake Forest's Charlotte and Philip Hanes Art Gallery from November 29-January 28. Nearly 50 works in a wide variety of media will be featured. Details | Top

Babcock School: Alumnus gift funds scholarships for ethical and social responsibility
MBA candidates who demonstrate awareness of responsibilities to the community and the environment will be eligible for new scholarships made possible by a $1.3 million gift from alumnus Thomas Dingledine MBA '78. The scholarships support the school's goal to produce business leaders who are committed to ethical, social and environmentally responsible management. The gift is the second substantial donation from Dingledine, who is the largest individual alumni donor in the Babcock School's history. Details | Top

Calloway School: Calloway team takes second in business competition
A team of three Calloway students recently took second place at the first Fisher Biz Quiz National Challenge, sponsored by Nationwide and The Wall Street Journal and held at the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University. Details | Top

Divinity School: First Divinity Student Named to Theological Fellowship
First year student Cameron Mason (M.Div '09), has recently been named a Congregational Fellow by the Fund for Theological Education (FTE). The Fellowship will provide her with significant financial support, which will be matched by her home congregation, Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. The Fund for Theological Education established the Congregational Fellowship to enable congregations to provide significant financial aid for students for whose call to ministry they have shaped. | Top

Graduate School: Education alumnae wins Waddill Award; teaching conference scheduled
Kristen Ring '94, MAEd '98 was honored with the Waddill Award for excellence in teaching at Fall Convocation. She is currently a secondary teacher at Forsyth Country Day School in Winston-Salem. Also, the Department of Education will hold its Emerging Teacher Leader Conference in January. First and second year teachers are invited to return to campus to consult on their experiences with faculty and peers. | Top

Law School: Dean search committee formed
The Law School Dean Search Committee has begun the process of finding and recruiting the next leader of our Law School. Suzanne Reynolds, Professor of Law and Chair of the Dean Search Committee, recently issued a report on the committee's progress and its plans for the upcoming semester. Details | Top

Medical School: School receives NIH planning grant
The School of Medicine has received an NIH planning grant to prepare to join a new national research consortium that will transform how clinical and translational research is conducted, ultimately enabling new treatments to reach patients more efficiently and quickly. Details | Top

ATHLETICS

Athletics: ACC Football win; Basketball teams back in action
Congratulations to the Wake Forest football team, which won its first ACC championship since 1970 by defeating Georgia Tech, 9-6, Dec. 2 in Jacksonville, Fla. The Demon Deacons are off to the Orange Bowl, scheduled for Jan. 2 at 8 p.m. in Miami. After final exams, the Wake Forest men's and women's basketball teams are back in action. The men's team opens ACC play Dec. 17 at Virginia Tech before returning home to play Gardner-Webb (Dec. 19) and Richmond (Dec. 22). The women's team plays at home Dec. 17 (vs. Winthrop), Dec. 21 (James Madison) and Dec. 30 (Richmond). Details on all Wake Forest sports | Top
