Letters from President Nathan O. Hatch on University activities and campus master plan
"As the opening of our academic year approaches, I want to update you on activities at the University and to welcome especially our new faculty and staff members. Along with Provost Jill Tiefenthaler, Dean Blake Morant in the School of Law, and Dean Lorna Grindlay Moore in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Reynolda Campus will have approximately 43 new faculty members. We anticipate a total enrollment of 5,895 on this campus." The full letter from President Hatch is available online. Dr. Hatch also has announced a year-long campus master planning process.

U.S. News ranks Wake Forest #30
Wake Forest ranks 30th among 262 national universities in the 2008 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s guide, “America’s Best Colleges.” Wake Forest was ranked 30th in last year’s edition and has been ranked in the top 30 in the national category since 1997. The University again fared well in categories such as graduation/retention rates and alumni giving rate.

New emergency preparedness measures taken
This fall, Wake Forest will start using new ways to alert its Reynolda Campus students, faculty and staff to emergencies and crises, including sending text and voice messages to their cell phones, using the campus cable TV system to display written messages on campus TV screens, and setting off a new steam whistle bought especially for such situations. New measures come after a thorough review of our crisis management procedures, inspired by the events of Virginia Tech.

Strategic Plan progress
The Planning Council has started evaluating plans submitted by academic and administrative departments on the Reynolda Campus as part of the University’s strategic planning process begun last year. Provost Jill Tiefenthaler announced via letter that the Planning Council members are identifying recurrent themes and ideas, focusing on those that best support the planning framework.

Entrepreneurship program garners national acclaim
Fortune Small Business magazine has recognized Wake Forest University’s entrepreneurship programs for being among the best in the nation. In “America’s Best Colleges for Entrepreneurs,” published in the September issue and posted online at money.cnn.com, Wake Forest joins a group of 24 colleges rated best for cross-campus entrepreneurship education. This marks the first time the magazine has compiled the list.

Librarian of Congress to speak at Fall Convocation October 30th
James H. Billington, the librarian of Congress for the past 20 years, will speak at Fall Convocation on Thursday, October 30 at 11 a.m. in Wait Chapel. The event is free and open to the public. Billington has led the Library of Congress as it has launched major Internet-related initiatives, including the library’s “American Memory” National Digital Library (NDL).

Reformed Mafia boss to speak September 18th
Michael Franzese, the highest-ranking Mafia official ever to quit the crime organization and live to tell about it, will present a lecture titled “Blood Covenant” at 7 p.m. on September 18 in Pugh Auditorium in the Benson University Center. The event is free and open to the public. Franzese speaks regularly about the dangers of gambling and delivers his anti-crime message to players, coaches and staffs of professional and collegiate sports teams and at universities.

Deaconshop.com, Wake Forest's online store, is now being operated by TeamFanShop, which powers the official online stores of some of the biggest sports teams nationwide. The online store can carry the largest possible assortment of WFU products and have the infrastructure and systems to deliver a top-notch shopping experience and customer service. Voices of Our Time

Voices of Our Time will host major immigration conference October 3-5
On October 3-5, Wake Forest will host the first of the fall-semester Voices of Our Time events. The conference, titled "Immigration: Recasting the Debate," will feature keynote addresses from Democratic and Republican perspectives and several forums with leading immigration policy experts and scholars discussing aspects of immigration. New exhibition and free Community Day at Reynolda House
Celebrate Forty Artful Years with a free community day on Saturday, September 8 from 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., featuring musical performances, readings, and art activities for children throughout the day. Musicians, including the Matt Kendrick Quartet, organist Margaret Sandresky, and Ken Frazelle with Marilyn Taylor and Ivan Seng, will perform compositions commissioned by Reynolda House. Balloons and anniversary cake will create a festive mood and vintage airplanes will be on the lawn. And don't miss the new exhibition Smith Reynolds and the Flight of 898 Whiskey.

Babcock School: Entrepreneurship, ROI earn school national accolades
Two publications have included Babcock among the nation’s best graduate business schools for the return on investment earned by its graduates and its entrepreneurial activities. Forbes ranked the school No. 31 for ROI, estimating that graduates break even on their MBA investment in 3.6 years. Fortune Small Business placed the school on its alphabetical listing of the nation’s top 26 graduate business programs for entrepreneurship.

Calloway School: U.S. News ranks Calloway #27
U.S. News & World Report ranked Wake Forest’s Calloway School of Business and Accountancy 27th in its listing of the top undergraduate business programs. The ranking of the best business programs is based on a survey of deans and senior faculty at business schools across the country. The Calloway School was previously ranked 29th.

Divinity School: Senior Pastor of Uganda Church to visit
Reverend Jackson Senyonga, founder and Senior Pastor of Christian Life Church in Kampala, Uganda, will be in Winston-Salem on September 14-17. Pastor Senyonga, whose father was murdered by Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, has been a leader in helping to transform Uganda and East Africa in the name of Jesus Christ.

Graduate School: Hot Topics Community Forum to be held October 16
Dean Lorna G. Moore has announced plans to hold a series of Hot Topics Community Forums this academic year. These forums will spotlight activities taking place at Wake Forest that involve graduate students and faculty working together to address important societal issues. Law School: Class of 2010 picks up hammers as part of Orientation
As part of orientation at the law school, new law students participated in the 2007 Community Service Project at a local Habitat for Humanity building site. Working in groups of 40 over a two-day period, the Class of 2010 picked up hammers, nails and boards to finish subflooring on three Habitat houses. The students were joined in this effort by a number of faculty, including the law school's newly appointed dean, Blake Morant.

Medical School: Anthony Atala receives Health Breakthrough Award from Ladies Home Journal
The N.C. General Assembly has awarded the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine $8 million in support of the Institute’s work to create regenerative therapies for soldiers wounded in combat – therapies that will ultimately benefit all trauma patients. Anthony Atala, M.D., the director of the Institute, recently received a Health Breakthrough Award from Ladies Home Journal and is featured in the September issue of the magazine, on newsstands now.
