President Hatch: "My Dreams for Wake Forest"
At the Summer Leadership Conference (for members of Wake Forest's volunteer boards and councils), President Nathan O. Hatch discussed the University's strategic plan and his vision for Wake Forest: "This morning we want to address the broad issue of strategic planning, how we best avoid drifting or lying at anchor. I want to introduce this topic by sharing with you 'My Dreams for Wake Forest,' a personal vision of our opportunities and challenges." Read Dr. Hatch's remarks | Top

Dean Walsh of Law School to retire
Robert K. Walsh, dean of the School of Law, announced that he plans to retire as dean next summer. Walsh, who will complete 18 years as dean in 2007, will remain at the School of Law as a full-time professor of law starting with the 2007-2008 academic year. "During Bob Walsh's term as dean, the School of Law has made enormous gains," said Wake Forest Provost William C. Gordon. "Certainly, the national and international reputation for excellence that the School of Law enjoys today is the direct result of Bob's outstanding leadership over so many years." Details | Top

University donates to Katrina relief effort
Wake Forest has donated residence hall furniture for the North Carolina Baptist Men's hurricane relief efforts. The University donated 350 wooden desk chairs, 150 upholstered chairs, 40 loveseats and assorted tables. Much of the furniture will be distributed in Gulfport, Mississippi, to Hurricane Katrina victims. Details | Top

Professor's research supports eliminating the penny
If the penny were eliminated, rounding prices to the nearest nickel would not cost consumers extra money, according to a new study by Robert M. Whaples, professor of economics. Whaples, an expert on the history of the U.S. economy, recently presented his findings at the John Locke Foundation, a nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank. "It's time to eliminate the penny," said Whaples, who estimates that the United States loses roughly $900 million a year on penny production and handling. Details | Top

Attention teachers: nominations for the Waddill Excellence in Teaching Award due October 16
The Marcellus Waddill Excellence in Teaching Award is given annually to two Wake Forest alumni who are exemplary classroom teachers in public or private K-12 schools. Established in 1994, the award is named in honor of Professor Emeritus of Mathematics Marcellus Waddill and funded by his son David. Each winner, one on the primary level (K - 6) and one on the secondary level (7 - 12), receives a $20,000 cash award; one of the largest monetary awards of any teacher-recognition honor in the country. Babcock School: New MA in Management program begins
The Babcock school welcomed an enthusiastic inaugural class for the new Master of Arts in Management program, which began July 17. Twelve of the program’s 13 students are Wake Forest graduates. The program exposes liberal arts and sciences majors to business fundamentals adapted from the MBA program’s first-year curriculum. Details | Top

Calloway School: Hinson named director of Master of Science in Accountancy program
Yvonne Hinson, PricewaterhouseCoopers Faculty Fellow and associate professor of accounting in the Calloway School, has been named director of the Master of Science in accountancy program. Details | Top

Divinity School: Famed Baptist minister establishes scholarship
Robert Seymour, known for his commitment to racial integration in the '60s and his prolific involvement in Baptist life, has founded with his wife the Pearl and Robert Seymour Scholarship Fund. The fund will be established to support the Divinity School by providing well needed financial support for graduate theological education. Details | Top

Medical School: Record number of medical students doing summer research
A record 53 medical students are conducting summer research projects at the School of Medicine. Richard St. Clair, Ph.D., chairman of the intramural research support committee, said the Office of Research was able to find the money to support all the students in a training program aimed at attracting more physicians into research and academic medicine. ATHLETICS

Athletics: Kemper ('98) holds #1 world ranking; Fan Fest to be held August 12
Former Wake Forest track and field athlete Hunter Kemper ('98) won the Life Time Fitness "Battle of the Sexes" Triathlon in Minneapolis in a time of 1:49:44.1. Kemper, a two-time Olympian, is currently ranked as the world's No. 1 triathlete. Kemper competed against a field of elite professional triathletes from around the world and captured the event's $200,000-value first-place prize. Details | Top

Fan Fest will be held Saturday, August 12th at 6:30 p.m. at Groves Stadium. Admission is free. Football players and student-athletes from all Demon Deacon fall sports will be on hand to sign autographs on the new FieldTurf.
