Graylyn Conference Center wins industry award
Graylyn International Conference Center of Wake Forest University has been awarded the 2005 Gold Key Award by Meetings & Conventions magazine. The award is voted on by readers of the magazine, who make selections based on the overall professionalism and quality of the property. Graylyn opened in 1984 and is a member of the International Association of Conference Centers. This marks the sixth consecutive year Graylyn has won the Gold Key Award.

Three join President Hatch's staff
Mary E. Pugel, Donna K. Gung, and Nancy S. Moore have joined the staff of President Nathan O. Hatch, who assumed the presidency July 1, after serving as provost at the University of Notre Dame. Mary Pugel serves as senior executive assistant to the president. Donna Gung is executive assistant to the president. Nancy Moore is executive assistant to Mary Pugel.

New director appointed for women's and gender studies
Wake Forest has named Wanda Balzano director of the women's and gender studies program. "This is a significant and promising moment for the women's and gender studies program," said Dean of the College Deborah Best ('70, MA '72). "I am sure that she (Balzano) will bring vision and enthusiasm to her new position." Balzano's career at Wake Forest began with the 2004-2005 academic year, during which she was a visiting scholar/assistant professor of women's and gender studies.

Ancient Mexican artifacts donated to the Museum of Anthropology
Hundreds of earthenware pots and other pre-Columbian artifacts from ancient West Mexico are now part of the collections of the Museum of Anthropology. The objects, most dating from 300 B.C. to 400 A.D., were donated to the museum in May. The collection of 1,040 pieces includes 162 complete ceramic vessels, ceramic figurines, greenstone beads and necklaces, obsidian spear and arrow points, knives, and grinding stones.

Last chance to see "Vanguard Collecting" at Reynolda House
August 21 is your last chance to see the exhibition "Vanguard Collecting: American Art at Reynolda House!" Comprised of twenty-five masterpieces gathered between 1966 and 1976, the show charts the museum's role in the exciting rediscovery of American masters like Frederic Church, Albert Bierstadt, John Singleton Copley, Childe Hassam, and Thomas Eakins. Coming September 15: "Diane Arbus: Family Albums," a photography exhibition organized by Mount Holyoke College Art Museum and the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas.

The Babcock School: Smunt named ACE fellow
Timothy L. Smunt, professor of management, has been named an American Council on Education Fellow for academic year 2005-06. The ACE Fellows Program is designed to strengthen institutions and leadership in American higher education by identifying and preparing promising senior faculty and administrators for responsible positions in college and university administration. Forty fellows, nominated by presidents or provosts of their institutions, were selected this year in a national competition.

The Divinity School: Alumnus creates scholarship for urban ministry
Robert ('59) and Stephany ('59) Alphin of Winston-Salem have established the Doug Bailey Urban Ministry Scholarship to honor the long-standing contributions of Rev. Douglass Bailey ('60), a man who has long worn the mantle of pastor, teacher, and advocate of the poor and disinherited.

The School of Medicine: Lambros named Assistant Dean for Education
M. Ann Lambros has been appointed assistant dean for education at the School of Medicine by Dr. William B. Applegate, senior vice president and dean. She played a major role in the school's innovative parallel curriculum from its beginning in the mid-1980s.

Fan Fest to be held August 12
Fan Fest 2005 will be held on Friday, August 12th at 7 p.m. in Groves Stadium and is free! In only its 4th year, Fan Fest is sponsored by the Wake Forest Sports Marketing Department to promote awareness about the fall sport season. It is also a great opportunity for fans from the community and Wake Forest alike to come out and meet coaches and players from the following fall sports: football, field hockey, women's volleyball, and women's soccer.
