Three Final Members of Presidential Search Committee Chosen
Significant progress continues in preparations to search for a successor to President Thomas K. Hearn, Jr., who retires next summer. Recently, the final three members of the presidential search committee have been appointed. In addition, selection is complete for members of two advisory committees: the Faculty Advisory Committee and the Volunteer Boards and Councils Advisory Committee. A search firm has been selected to assist in the committee’s efforts. Details | Top

Technology Quarters House Set to Open | Tech House Image |
Nine Wake Forest University students will experience high-tech living in a house this academic year that has been equipped by the University’s Information Systems (IS) department with some of the latest technology. The Technology Quarters house will allow the students to learn about new technology, share technical expertise, and help the University test new software and hardware being considered for campus use. Psychology Professor Publishes Book on The Curse of the Self
Self-reflection, the uniquely human ability to think about past mistakes, plan for the future, and take steps toward self-improvement, seems like a blessing. It is also a curse, says Mark Leary, professor and chair of psychology at Wake Forest University. In his new book, The Curse of the Self, Leary explores how people create a variety of personal and social problems by thinking about themselves too much. Often, feelings such as depression, anxiety, and anger occur because individuals cannot stop dwelling on some past failure or future worry. Details | Top

WFU Appoints Mark Welker Associate Provost for Research | Mark Welker Image |
Mark E. Welker has been named associate provost for research at Wake Forest University. Since last year, Welker had held the post on an interim basis. His permanent appointment became effective July 1. Welker will remain Wake Forest Professor of Chemistry while serving as associate provost for research. Details | Top

Longino Elected President of the Gerontological Society of America
Charles F. Longino, Jr., Wake Forest Professor of Sociology and director of the Reynolda Gerontology Program, has been elected president of the Gerontological Society of America. Longino is also professor of public health sciences at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Longino will serve as president-elect beginning in November and will become president in November 2005. Details | Top

Arnold Palmer Golf Academy Dedicated to Dick Tiddy (’53)
Arnold Palmer (’51, LL.D. ’70) has dedicated the eleventh annual Wake Forest Alumni Golf Academy at his Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando, Florida, to the memory of his classmate and longtime friend, Dick Tiddy (’53). The head professional at Bay Hill since 1971, Tiddy passed away in May at the age of 74. Two academy dates have been scheduled: September 30–October 2 and November 4-6. The Babcock School: Patel Chosen Educator of the Year by Students
Dean Ajay Patel has been named Educator of the Year by the graduating class of this year’s full-time MBA program at Wake Forest University’s Babcock Graduate School of Management. Students selected Patel, Babcock Research Professor of Finance, based upon his “outstanding contributions to the education and personal development of the students.” Details | Top

The Divinity School: Dean Bill Leonard Co-Hosts Baptist History Tour | Bill Leonard Image |
Dean Bill Leonard will co-host a 15-day Baptist History Tour, to take place July 18–August 1, 2005. This tour of Prague and London will include participation in the Baptist World Centenary Congress being held in Birmingham, England. Details | Top

The School of Law: Orientation for New Students Emphasizes Professionalism
Orientation for new law students is just around the corner. At Wake Forest, several orientation events emphasize the professional responsibilities that students assume in law school and as future members of the legal community. Details | Top

The School of Medicine: Grand Opening for Outpatient CCC
Patients are now being seen in the new Outpatient Comprehensive Cancer Center on the Bowman Gray campus. The OCCC will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 28. Details: Details | Top

Men’s Soccer Ranked Sixth in Pre-Season Poll
| Athletics Image | The Wake Forest men’s soccer team was ranked sixth in the CollegeSoccerNews.com preseason poll that was released on July 29. Wake Forest returns sixteen letter winners and eight starters from last season’s squad that finished the season 15-5 overall and ranked second in the entire country. Men’s soccer has home games at Spry Stadium Aug. 21 vs. Charlotte (Ex.) and Aug. 28 vs. Furman (Ex.); women’s soccer has home games Aug. 21 vs. Elon (Ex.) and Aug. 30 vs. UNCG; and the two-time defending national champion field hockey team has home games Aug. 28 vs. Iowa and Aug. 29 vs. Michigan.
