Undergraduate Admissions

Academic Core Requirements

At Wake Forest, undergraduate students complete a set of core requirements to earn their degree. Course RequirementsThe core includes basic and divisional courses that broaden education by including classes in both the liberal arts and sciences. A student is required to complete the core requirements that are in effect during the year in which he or she enrolls. Most students complete the core requirements during the first two years at Wake Forest. To ensure that core requirements are met, a faculty advisor helps each student plan an academic program.

The basic and divisional course information presented on this Web page apply to students enrolling for the 2007-08 academic year. Wake Forest Undergraduate Bulletins from past academic years are available for review in the publications archive.

Basic core requirements

  • One first-year seminar
  • English 111 (writing seminar)
  • One 200-level foreign language course (by placement exam; preparatory work of one, two, or three semesters is sometimes necessary.)
  • Two courses in health and exercise science
  • Divisional core requirements

Divisional course requirements are broad, and there are many choices available. Students must take courses in each of the five divisions of the undergraduate curriculum. Departments choose which courses will satisfy divisional requirements. Those courses that do meet the divisional requirements are designated with a (D) following the descriptions in the 2007-08 Undergraduate Bulletin.

For more complete information, a PDF of the 2007-2008 Wake Forest Undergraduate Bulletin is available.

    Cultural Diversity and

    Declaring a Major

Major and/or minor requirements for individual departments and programs will be those that are in effect at the time a student declares--usually in the spring of the sophomore year. After a student is accepted into a major, the department provides an advisor who assists in planning the junior and senior year course schedules.
