GUIDE
TO THE SOCIOLOGY MAJOR
DECLARING
THE MAJOR:
1) Completion of - or concurrent enrollment in - at least one sociology course
and an earned GPA of 2.0 or better in all sociology courses
is a prerequisite for declaration of the major.
2) It is expected that declaration will occur
in the spring semester of the sophomore year.
COMPLETING
THE MAJOR:
1) Thirty-one hours of sociology courses,
with a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the major, are required for
graduation.
a) There
are four core courses - any 100-level Soc course, Soc 370, Soc 371, and Soc 372 - required
of all majors. This accounts for thirteen hours. Students are
encouraged to complete these courses as soon as possible.
b) Eighteen additional hours
of sociology electives (perhaps from six, three-hour
courses) are required of majors.
c) Students are encouraged
not to pursue 100 level courses in their senior
year; and to maintain a GPA of 2.0 in the three
upper-division core courses - in addition to
the required overall GPA of 2.0 in Sociology.
d) FOR STUDENTS DECLARING IN 2008 AND LATER
Majors may receive credit towards the major for
only two 100-level courses; and majors can not
receive major credit for any 100-level course taken in
their senior year.
d) FOR STUDENTS DECLARING IN 2009 AND LATER
Majors must earn a grade of C- or higher in each of the
core courses.
2) Soc 370, 371, and 372 have the following prerequisite: students must have completed a 100-level sociology course or recieve permission of the instructor (POI) in order to enroll in these courses.
3) Some other sociology courses may require special permission of the instructor (POI) or have other particular requirements for enrollment.
4) Majors are encouraged to finish the core courses early in their coursework - particularly prior to the final semester.
5) A
maximum of fifty hours of credit from courses in the sociology
department can be applied towards graduation.
HONORS
IN THE MAJOR:
1) Honors in the major is by departmental
invitation during the spring semester of the junior year.
2) Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA overall
and a 3.3 GPA in the major.
3) Honors coursework consists of a two semester
sequence of courses (Soc 373 and 374) taken during the fall
and spring of the senior year.
4) For majors intending to pursue honors
in sociology, Soc 370, 371 and 372 are recommended prior
to Soc 373.
