Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Bechtel received his undergraduate education at North Dakota State University (B.A., 1972) and his graduate training in sociology at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (Ph.D., 1983).

He joined the Wake Forest sociology faculty in 1982. His current teaching interests include courses in Criminology, Deviant Behavior, Juvenile Delinquency and the Sociology of Law. He has conducted research and published in the areas of deviance in science, police history and the historical presence of minorities in science.Current research includes a cultural/comparative study of homicide; and an analysis of the occupational organization of public attorneys.He is the author of "State Police in the United States"; and co-editor (with Willie Pearson, Jr.) of Blacks, Education, and American Science: Perspectives on the Black Presence in American Science.
