ABSTRACT

The range of electromagnetic properties that nature has provided in conventional materials is broad but limited in several important areas. A resurgence and dramatic expansion of some old ideas of how to engineer the electromagnetic properties of materials has enabled the design and fabrication of materials with unusual electromagnetic properties. This capability has also motivated the development of some theoretical recipes for interesting applications that build on the ability to precisely control the electromagnetic response of materials. I will describe the design methodologies and theoretical underpinnings of these materials, some experimental techniques used to confirm their unusual properties, and some of the novel applications that might be realizable with materials with carefully controlled electromagnetic properties.
