The program in gerontology is designed to prepare graduate students for professional careers in the field of aging. It emphasizes current theoretical developments in aging as well as applied research and the policy implications of a rapidly aging society. Students in the program may choose from among three established concentrations.

The interdisciplinary Program in Gerontology offers an undergraduate minor, a graduate certificate, and a Master of Arts in Gerontology. The undergraduate program is designed to provide students with academic and field experiences in the area of aging. The graduate certificate is designed to provide graduate education in gerontology for those who already have a graduate degree or those currently completing a degree in another field. The Master of Arts in gerontology is designed to prepare graduates with the knowledge and skills to fill a wide variety of positions in the developing field of aging.

The UNC Institute on Aging fosters research, education and service linkages on the Chapel Hill campus and in partnership with academic institutions, government and service agencies statewide in North Carolina, in projects to enhance the well-being of older North Carolinians. University of North Carolina - Greensboro (UNCG)

Offers a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Gerontology and Master of Science in Gerontology. UNCG has many programs with gerontological content at the graduate level, including gerontological counseling, nursing nad family gerontology in addition to their inter-disciplinary program. The Institute on Aging offers a mentored research apprenticeship, which includes close contact with a doctoral advisor, weekly colloquia and professional development seminars conducted by leading national gerontologists, conference travel support, and a strong emphasis on methodological training. Some students will also qualify for research assistantship and fellowship funding through the Institute on Aging. Now offering a new multidiciplinary pre-doctoral training fellowship program in the Sociology of Aging, Health and the Life Course.

In 1995, the University of South Florida launched its new doctoral program in Aging Studies. As of  fall 1996, there are more than 40 faculty members associated with the Ph.D. program who represent a wide variety of disciplines ranging from the arts to basic sciences. The emphasis is on research using an interdisciplinary approach, combining diverse research methods and areas of expertise to study the aging process. Students in the program are eligible for an annual stipend as well as research and teaching assistantships with the USF community. Most Ph.D. students receive tuition waivers provided by the USF Graduate School.
