Our Facilities
The chemistry department is located on the beautiful main
Reynolda Campus. The department has important ties with
many other departments on the main campus and at the
Wake Forest University Medical School, thus fostering a truly
interdisciplinary research environment. Located in the hospitable
city of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, students have
ready access to affordable housing near campus, exciting collegiate
and professional athletics, many cultural and musical
events, and numerous parks and facilities for outdoor pursuits.
State-of-the-art instrumentation is one of the hallmarks of
the graduate program. Students benefit from direct interaction
with two full-time Ph.D. level instrumentation managers,
and can be personally trained in the operation of a wide range
of instrumentation, including:
- Bruker Avance 300 and 500MHz NMR spectrometers
- Single crystal- and powder x-ray diffractometers
- Gel and capillary electrophoresis systems
- Gas- and liquid-chromatography (including GC-MS and LC-MS)
systems
- FT-IR, EPR, Raman, UV-visible and fluorescence spectrometers
- Atomic absorption and inductively coupled plasma spectrometers
- Electrochemical and polarographic systems.
Computational facilities include a 128 node Linux Beowulf
cluster comprising dual processor Intel Xeon x335 CPU’s.
Software includes Gaussian 03 and GAMESS electronic
structure packages, extensive mathematical libraries and
Fortran, C/C++ compilers. Our library contains over 225 current
journal subscriptions in chemistry and physics and online
computer searching of over 200 databases is available.
