HONORS IN ANTHROPOLOGY
The Department of Anthropology confers graduation honors on
students who possess distinguished records in Anthropology and
in overall academic performance. To graduate with Honors in
Anthropology, a student must have grade point averages of at
least a 3.0 in all work and at least a 3.5 in Anthropology. The
student must propose, carry out, write, and defend in oral
examination a research project. The process of the research
proposal, faculty approval, conduct of the research, writing of
the results and defense of the research typically requires most
of the senior year. Honors designation is contingent on the
student's final grade point average.
Procedures:
- Once the student believes he/she will be qualified for
Honors, he/she should select a faculty advisor to work with
on the choice of a suitable topic. The advisor must be a
full-time member of the Anthropology Department. The
student and the advisor will then select two other faculty
members to serve with the advisor as members of the
student's Honors Committee. At least two of the three
members of the Honors Committee must be full-time members
of the department, but the third may be a part-time or
adjunct faculty member, or, if approved by the faculty, an
anthropologist from another institution or
organization.
- The student must circulate the topic among the
committee members for preliminary approval no later
than September 15th of the senior year. If
the committee believes it is appropriate, the student may
receive as many as four (4) credits for academic work done
in support of the honors project.
- The advisor will supervise the student's research,
including the preparation of the research paper. The paper
should be a scholarly treatment of the topic and should be
written in American Anthropologist style.
- The student, under the advisor's guidance, will
schedule a date when the research will be presented to the
committee and an oral examination on the topic will be
held. The entire faculty will be notified of the date of
the examination, and those who are not members of the
committee have the option of attending if they so
choose.
- Upon successful completion of the paper and
examination, the advisor will certify the student for
Honors and the Department Major Advisor will advise the
Registrar of the student's graduation with Honor in
Anthropology.
Recommended Schedule for Honors:
- Selection and preliminary approval of the topic should take
place as early as possible. This is appropriate near the end of
the student's junior year but must be no later than the
beginning of the senior year.
- A draft of the honors paper should be circulated to all
faculties no later than the 1st of March of the
student's graduation year.
- The presentation of the research and the examination should
take place no later than April 1st of the graduation
year.
- The paper must be submitted to the Department in final
approved form no later than April 30th of the
graduation year.
