Dr. Eric Bowne (Ph.D., is a visiting professor who specializes in the ethnohistory and
archaeology of Southeastern Native Americans. However, he also harbors
a special interest in the golden age of piracy. After completing his Ph.D.
at the University of Georgia in 2003, Bowne taught at both Appalachian
State University and the University of Mississippi. His first book, The
Westo Indians: Slave Traders of the Early Colonial South, was published
by the University of Alabama Press in 2005. His current interests and
projects include completing his second book, and helping to create a club
sports toli league among southern colleges and universities. Toli is the
southern version of lacrosse and must be considered the oldest sport still
played in North America. [2005]
