Common Databases for Chemial Literature Searches > Medline > Example
(Note: means screen capture available to show you how it looks like.)

Example: You are very interested in pediatric medicine. You have recently heard that zinc lozenges may be effective at treating the common cold, and so you want to know if any studies have been done specifically looking at these effects in children with colds. Conduct a literature search to find the American state in which the most recent study of the effect of zinc on the common cold in children was conducted.

Suggestion (note: there are no right or wrong answers for how one should conduct literature searches, but here is a suggestion or example search for you to look at):

  1. Try Medline, select Advanced Search. (Click here if you do not know how to access Medline.)
  2. Try using "zinc lozenges " for the Subject keywords, and try putting in "1998-1999" for the Years. You are welcome to try adding other keywords for Abstract or Subject, etc.

Comments from Dr. Christa Colyer: The Medline search above might be amended to include "zinc" (rather than zinc lozenges) AND "cold" (subject keyword) AND "children" (subject keyword) -- then you end up with two very relevant papers.
